I have worked for 25 years in the most senior positions, making well into 6 figures. I lost my job a year ago and haven't been able to find anything since other than a short term Interim assignment .. have tried everything but approach people on street! I'm not that driven by money any more and have applied for jobs paying less than half I was earning before but when a recruiter does talk to me (which is very very rare) they simply don't want to get it and won't support my application. Seems like damned if I do, damned if I don't

There's an easy answer to that one, then, isn't there. Blimey, nearly 50% over the national average wage and they can't be arsed - can't be that desperate can they.

I know!! They were told that if that was what they expected despite it being made clear that the salary was the salary and not a point of negotiation then they could do one. We are really careful about benchmarking and making sure we are offering competitive salaries and most importantly career porgression paths.

I cannot believe that in this climate we are showing people that there is a chance toi join a really exciting company, a great career path and they reckon having done f***ing business studies and sociology at WEstminster University they are entitled to demand a wage of £30k in their first job.

Utterly deluded.

My first reaction is that clearly these people need a slap. My second, delayed, reaction is that it calls into the question the value of a degree. What sort of debt are these people racking up such that they feel it necessary to hold out for another £5k?

There is a case thatanyone is lucky to have a job, but also hate that fact that employers are getting away with low wages and lack of payrises just because we are lucky to have a job. I know the climate is bad but in company that is still thriving. Any excuse to stop a bonus and pay rise.

My company has over inflated targets and has been hitting most of them and yet when it came to getting a bonus they worked out their stratergy on how poor other companies were doing in our sector and nothing to do with how well the company is doing :nono:

I have interviewed 28 candidates since January 5th.

Made 5 offers all of which were met with the response - yes I'm really interested but would expect a basic of £30k as i am a graduate.

f*** sake!!!! How can it be this hard in this environment to find some people who have a little ambition, some drive, intelligent and articulate and want to get on.

Clearly it would seem it is very hard.

I would say you need to check your interview techniques, you managed to reduce 28 to 5 idiots demanding More than the average graduate income for 2 positions that are non-professional. What the f*** is wrong with them and you?

Wow. My sons friends are quality graduates and they are not earning approaching that. And these are what I would say are really good candidates.

Harsh. How many interviews have you ever been to where the salary is discussed first? Don't you just assume the salary is advertised with the job, then when you've picked the most suitable candidate you finalise personal terms?

I suspect as HR has been taken over by a woman who's daughter works in Recruitment it may be that. But that's just a suspicion.

Thats bad practise, it would cost thousands to take on staff from agencies, people of the street are free. That sounds like the companies been embezzaled, report her.

We're on the Victoria Industrial Estate in Burgess Hill.

For some reason my company has a policy of not even interviewing anyone who comes knocking at doors even though I class it as having a bit of gumption about you.

Can't they even have a stack of application forms at the reception desk that they can send the person away with? Seems a pretty heartless and shortsighted policy to me.

Do you use the Paddington train? I remember once (on the 8:12am to Slough) seeing a bloke with a Brighton training top on and obviously gave him the thumbs up!

As for the walking up to people in streets, never get it regarding work, but do for money and fags, but this is London. In fact a fair few times had people trying to sponge fags from me that were well dressed and well spoken!

Im in the same boat as the person in the top post. Its not as if im not trying either, ive gone round town handing my CV into near enough every shop and i get no replies. Im applying for the "lower" jobs like cleaners but to no success. Id say that about 3/4 jobs advertised want skilled and qualified people too. Hopefully ill find something soon though.

Most. Either in application or interview. Salary expectations have been discussed. Cut the bullshit here, most people work for money not love. If you cant throw up or ask for a ball park figure you deserve to be stuffed. Its incompetence.

I guess your style is supposed to be both provocative and assumptive. We use a resourcing company in London who specialise in graduate software sales recruitment. We have around 20 placements a year using this method in the UK.

We have also around 40 placements in Barcelona for business development reps and use a similar european equivalent for recruitment there.

I have neither the time or the inclination to source through the tons of CV's required to get down to the top 20-30.

The salary information is provided to all candidates through the recruitment agency. Each of the 5 this time round for the UK role knew the salary and OTE before the final interview.

On receiving the verbal offer through HR they responded with the same feedback which was an effort in negotiating a higher basic. they were told to do one.

Not sure why the tone of your comment was so terse.

Nearly always in application, in my experience.

Either they've advertised the job poorly (perhaps as £25+ without specifying what the '+' means) or the candidate is a total fuckwitt (which seems to be what [MENTION=2159]Digweeds Trousers[/MENTION] is suggesting). My suspicion is that it isn't down to the interviewer.
