This might be a bit controversial, but as the 15 military personel return home I must admit that I'm a bit embarrassed by the whole episode.
I don't like the way they were taken so easily. I don't like seeing them seeming so relaxed & smiling whilst having food & drinks served to them. I don't like the way they stood & "admitted" to wrongdoing. I didn't like seeing them shaking hands with the Iranian president & thanking him for his kindness! It's just embarrassing, in my opinion of course.

All headline news while more of our troops die in Iraq; (probably a whole column inch somewhere tomorrow).

If we weren't a joke in the eyes of some countries before this; we bloody are now.

Ex-Navy mate! f*** knows!

Hampshire Seagulls will probably give a better answer to that. As for me, like I say I just find it all embarrassing. I was in Pompey last night visiting friends & we were talking about it & most lads still in the mob feel the same way.

I was an instructor on the Conduct After Capture course, now called SERE to fall in line with the Yanks (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape). Considering the the matelots have probably never had a briefing on how to conduct themselves, and Royal will have completed the 2 day course, they did the best that they could reasonably be expected to do. Isolated, being told to repeat lies under duress, produce letters under the same conditions, with no real understanding of how it was being played out at home, what information was being ascribed to them in the world media, they did the best they could. The real problems here are:

Women in the front line. Maybe they can do the job, but are we really ready for the enemy to use them against us when they are captured?

The ease of capture, considering that a helo would have been on task.

The inquiry will be interesting.

Although I generally agree with your sentiment. This 'war' is simple not that straight forward it's a complete mess and is more of a political battlefield than a traditional one. If I was still serving I think I would be totally disillussioned fighting this 'war', unless of cause I was being offered a share incentive scheme for the oil pipline that will eventually come.

We are fighting this battle as the righteous saviours of democracy (!) and therefore cannot be seen to step over the boundaries (polically and terratorially). If we had taken any action against Iran we would simple descend into more of a mess and more innocent bloodshed.
