There's a rat in the kitchen (what am I gonna do?)

The blighter was spotted in the kitchen last night as it scarpered behind the dishwasher. After puling out the dishwasher a hole was apparent by the waste outlet. Stuffed this up with newspaper as a temporary measure.

Any rodent experts out there? Whats the best thing to do? Can I call the council or do I have to take the thing on myself?

rats teeth can cut through steel, i think an exterminator is the only answer.

Remove its food source.

Don't poison it, as they usually scurry off and die under the floorboards where you can't get to them and cause a right stink as they rot.

You need a rat trap. Get one from Homebase for about 7 quid. Bait it with peanut butter (though because I am middle class, I managed to catch TWO mice using Tiramisu as a bait the other week)

Do it FAST because they breed like billyo. I'm afraid it's the only way.

do NOT get poison, for the reason I stated above.

And yeah, a mouse is only a few inches long. My old pet rats were about 15" long nose to tail.

Rats make great pets, although they get very friendly by pissing on you.

If you strategically place stools (as in seats, not poo) around the kitchen, your feet will never need to touch the floor.

Rats and mice will eat anything they can get, so bait really can be anything edible; cornflakes, chocolate, nuts, raisins blah blah.

You need to be able to dispose of the body, and ensure that there aren't a family - so keep baiting trap and see what happens.

There is now one less rat in the world - just got a text from my brother in France on a fishing trip and he says the only thing he's caught so far was a rat which swam out and ate his floating bait during the night.
