More confirmation, as if any more were needed to me, why spending my hard earned money and mixing with people in today’s society doesn’t appeal anymore!

Most people I think leave it to the performers until the last song of the night when the audience is usually encouraged to stand up and sing along. I saw The Jersey Boys and Beautiful the Carol King story last year at the Congress Theatre in Eastbourne and I could hear people quietly singing along throughout and having a lovely time but not enough to spoil the show.
Walking up and down the aisles telling people not to sing along seems a bit much though.

John McGrath wrote a manifesto back in the seventies called 'A Good Night Out' which detailed how to go about addressing the gap between theatre and working class audiences. Take it to them rather than asking them to enter your hallowed space, serve food, have a bar open, use music, break the 4th wall, allow audience participation. If this was all good enough for 7:84 doing 'The Cheviot, the stag and the black, black oil' to tell the history of the highland clearances and colonialism in Scotland, why are those peddling jukebox musicals being so precious?

These shows are not high art. They are money making exercises, specifically designed to fill theatres with fans of the songs. Had this audience paid to see Whitney, they'd have been able to sing along. Shushing them whilst somebody pretends to be Whitney smacks a little of overdue self importance.

Yep. I'm a music lover and must say that the awful din shouldn't be heard in public.
