I'm not going to comment on potential guilt or the cause of crash. Regardless of fault or cause, two people have loss their lives by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That is a tragedy.

BBC News - Manchester Citys Courtney Meppen-Walter held over crash deaths

What stands out for me in that report: WTF is an 18 year old doing at the controls of a Mercedes? Forget the fact this person plays for Manchester City & despite being only 18, no doubt has the financial clout to buy a vehicle like this. It doesn't state what type of Merc this vehicle was, but I would be surprised if it was some 1200cc runabout.

Surely its time to toughen the law for younger drivers & have restrictions on them regarding the CC size of any vehicle they can drive, the time of day they can drive, like they do in The USA & Canada for example?

Far from being tough on offenders it seems that the cheaper option is to offer everyone on a driver improvement course. I wonder why that is?

This sounds like the type of thread Bozza is going to have a nightmare with!

Although I agree to an extent im not sure making laws about what size cars young drivers is the answer. I was 19 when I traded up from a renault clio 1.2 to a Renault megane convertable 2.0 litre. It felt like having a hyperspace button under my right foot at that age but I never once even came close to having an accident or crash.

A couple of months after that my mate asked me to drive a Peugeot 306 1.4 from his house and pick him up from the airport as I was travelling along the Old Shoreham road near Holmbush I hit a bloody pavement and bollard in the middle and span the car facing on coming traffic. Luckily I didnt hit any body else and the only damage was the tyres & rims.

Just goes to show accidents & crashes will happen with young people regardless of what engine size they have it all comes down to the person behind the wheel.

Thats because young people believe that it will never happen to them. It is only with age that you realise that life is very tenuous.

I understand what you're saying about him driving a merc, but he could have been driving a punto and still been involved in the accident.

Like you've stated, young should have restrictions on the amount of passengers, night driving etc and i also think they should raise the age from 17 to 19.

Passengers I agree with but if they restricted night driving I know of at least 2 people I work with who could potentially be unable to get to/from work as we work shifts that can include finishing very late/starting very early.

I drive for a living and i can tell you its not just young drivers that can be nutters, seen it from all ages men and woman. They need to make the punishment more severe, like life long driving bans and longer prison sentence's, that might make people drive with more care

The BBC's North of England reporter Nick Ravenscroft said he understood the 19-year-old was known to Meppen-Walter and that police were investigating the way the two vehicles were being driven in the moments before the collision.

That reads like 'boys will be boys' instantly became all too real life.

Are you saying that you can knock somebody over and kill them in a Merc but not in a small 800cc Diahatsu (sp) It is the manner in which the vehicle is driven not the size of the car or engine although it may help if it goes faster.

I would guess the issue here is the way that the cars were being driven by these 2 lads, if they weren't allowed to drive cars that could be driven so fast then they wouldn't be driving that way.

this. the make and model of car makes no difference to poor driving. as there was another driver arrested at the same incident, driving a VW Golf, sort of illustrates this point (and suggests what was the underlying cause... but lets not speculate).

Couldn't agree more. Regardless of what happened in this incident, I've seen kids driving their parents cars which are way too fast for them and they usually drive like a twat too. Anything to help prevent RTA's is good in my book. Seen too many people go in these i'm afraid...

No that's not it atall. I'd even forget this incident, as a sidenote, these kids shouldn't be allowed to drive stupidly quick cars. I personally would rather stupidly fast cars didn't exist on our roads - I've always thought all cars should be capped at 70mph altho im sure there's a technical reason this could never happen etc etc !

I cut those involved in RTAs out of their cars for a living.

Those who are either dead, die from their injuries or suffer life changing injuries are very often younger drivers - usually male, and certainly disproportionate as a percentage to the total population of drivers.

The other striking factor is that it is usually between 22:00hrs and 03:00hrs and there will often be 2 or more passengers. It is not unusual that it is a passenger that dies.

RTAs are the main cause of death for young people between that ages of 16 - 24. We go into schools and colleges to try to educate young drivers, but the truth is that they think it will never happen to them.

Yes they do think they are all ace drivers, and a load i see not wearing seatbelts, or the passengers not wearing them

i do wonder why with a 70mph speed limit, cars will easily do over 120mph? why cant they be limited unless you go on a track day or something?

although i appreciate that still wont stop people doing 60 in a 30 and seriously injuring themselves and others anyway.

There does seem to be more joyriders and car accidents in the Greater Manchester region than other areas on a Friday or Saturday night. Drive through red traffic lights at high speed on those roads and it can often end fatally.

Thoughts with the couple's family and friends after last night's tragedy.
