It is too much to ask of any programme to live up to The Sopranos but you will be satisfied with The Wire.

I am almost at the end of the Sopranos (last 3 discs of Episode 6 - 2) and much as I have enjoyed it, it does not compare in quality or plot lines to the Wire. I have never seen another series I have enjoyed more. The last series of the Wire was a bit of a letdown but I gather they wound it up rather quickly for whatever reason.

i wouldn't sit down in front of it for a marathon, expecting it to grab you as the best thing ever on TV... just put it on and let it drift, absorb it and find out natually that its really rather good and possibly the best thing ever on TV.

a few years ago me and my wife watched the first 3 episodes on DVD of the first series. We immediatley wanted to watch the next episodes and I went up to the shop to get it out....but they didn't have it.Next day didn't have it either....after a couple of days, I couldn't be arsed, lost all interest. Sure it must be good but, think a lot of it is to do with the 'what happened next' aspect of it....like soap operas. And I doubt very much that I would ever watch it again once I had seen it all like I would a good film or tv series that I really love like Peep show or something.

Shop in this day? we have the interweb for this sort of thing

The street lingo can be a challenge though. Occasionally I have to rewind and reply a line of dialogue with the subtitles on just to make it out, y'all.

I ended up watching them all with the subtitles on, it helped a lot with the slang and names etc, fantastic series definitely worth wasting a few (lot) of hours on

Well, last night I watched the first 2, (from the first series).
Even without the hype, I think I would definitely have stuck with it.

I'm now left with a bit of a 'chicken and egg' situation, as my feel for the series, seems to mirror this thread.

I haven't watched Luther yet, and the little I've seen of Dominic West tells me that The Wire has so far been all the actors' Everest - good actors sure, but they all scaled heights in that series I've yet to see for a while.

Same here. I watched 2 episodes without subtitles and just couldn't get into it. Went back to it after about 6 months and had subtitles on the whole time - now on series 4! It is brilliant and definitely the most watchable thing I've seen on TV for a while.

OK so I'm now halfway through, and am really enjoying it.
Personal highlights so far being McNulty and Bunk investigating D's shooting of the woman, (different inflections of Fcuk), Bubble, McNulty drunk v Ikea.

I think the story is compelling, and script is strong, but I am struggling with some of the cast/acting, namely Hurk (?) and his partner and the code/eye breaking copper.

But Bunk is definitely a true legend.

"Mcnulty" a.k.a Dominic West got married @ Glin Castle in Limerick today. A mate of mine is attending so would be interested to see any pictures anyone comes across via papers / online, just to see if the fat gooch got in any (my mate that is, not West, or Bunk)!

If you can check out Generation Kill. It was David Simon's project after The Wire. It's about the first days of the Iraq invasion. It's immense but has only 7 episodes.

Also read his book Homicide and couldn't put it down.Highly recommended.

Loved homicide, also check out the television series which is also very good if not as good as the wire.

I thought it was superb, easily the best one.

When Wifey stops says 'strrinnnggg' and 'buuurrnaarrrrdddd' is a high pitched voice we would naturally progress to 4.

Which is where this question arises.

Is 4 any good?
I've read the synopsis and it seems quite a departure from what we're used to.

Season 4 is, in my view, the best season of the lot. May sound like a bit of a departure with a bunch of new characters thrown in and something of a different primary focus (i.e. the school system) but as with the previous seasons, the story it tells is as compelling as ever. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

If I remember I preferred four to three, it seemed more realistic and likely than three which at times came across alittle far fetched. If i could put my series in order it would be 1,4,2,3. I am gonna have to go and watch them all again now. well that's a month of my life gone! Thanks a bunch Stat Brother.
