[Albion] The value of Potter

Quite an extensive OP.

However his value to Ostersund and Swansea at the end of the day are irrelevant to Brighton. He has got his pat on the back for his achievements at his previous clubs by landing the Brighton job on the strength of them.

To have any value to Brighton he has to keep them in the PL. Otherwise he immediately knocks £120m in value off the Balance Sheet next year.

The points haul to date is absolutely fine. A point per game average till the end of the season is easily achievable and it he atains that then he is a success. Anything less and he isn't. That's the stark reality.

Comes across as a nice bloke but he isn't learning from his mistakes defensively. In fact. He isn't even learning from his successes. By that I mean. When he brings Duffy back into a 3 man central defence it yealds at least a point and the last win if I an correct had Duffy and Dunk at the heart of a 3 man central defence.

Now I don't think he is 100% to blame on the inconsistent selections. I have a feeling he might be overly influenced on that front.

If that is the case then he needs to start taking 100% responsibility and start to be open to adapting to a formation that yields points rather than trying to tickle the ears of TV Pundits because staying in the PL is what he will ultimately be judged on whether others above him like it or not

Careful now you may well fall foul of The Thread Starting Police.

Of that list the only ones that would impress me are James and McBurnie.

A million here or there may be significant in Scandinavian football, but that is pittance in Premier League terms. Less than a million is a few months wages in most cases.

The value of Potter is certainly his style of play and his balls to play young players. My question mark is now if he can cope with top level football. I dearly want Potter to succeed but I’m worried the guy is getting found out a bit at this level. And he’s lost his balls a bit lately which is also concerning (not playing Alzate, not giving AJ a run of games, not even putting Alexis / Lamptey on the bench etc).

Try and forget about yesterday when we did miss chance after chance. How many chances did we make against Watford, I can remember 1 and then they scored for us. How many did we make at Sheffield Utd away, 1? Villa at home? It’s a complete myth that we create loads of chances and don’t take them. Generally we have a lot of possession and do **** all with it!

it's not a myth that we create chances - it's statistically true: https://understat.com/league/EPL

we just can't finish our ****ing dinner

Fear you might get flamed for not seeing the link to management there.

OK, I’ll bite, how is Potter responsible for players missing gilt edged goal opportunities week after week. Potter’s style is responsible for us making those chances, how the hell can he be blamed that they are not taken? If he was leaving proven goal scorers out or on the bench you’d have a point. Sadly Murray is not quick or mobile enough to play Potterball, in fact he’s not quick or mobile enough to be anything but a sub. Connolly, one game aside is nowhere near ready to be relied on as a PL striker. In fact he is so small and easily brushed aside that I doubt he ever will be unless he grows or gets much stronger. Who else do we have?

Pointing the finger at the recruitment team and the Championship striker budget is more sensible imo.

Potter is in charge of training the players. Ashworths job is to bring the Maupays for £20m, Potters job is to turn them into £40m players and to make good players out of good talents. And of course to win a bit of football matches, which I think wont be this hard next season independent of division.

Edit: About Pröpper... maybe. He is a bit of a weird one.

Well he needs to start doing all of the above, though I agree i think it could be better next season regardless of the division.

The OP in this thread seems to be making the argument that Potter's value is in his ability to improve players, make them better. If the players are missing gilt edged goal opportunities week after week, can he really be providing value - if the players aren't improving and wasting fewer shots/chances as the weeks go by, then he's not doing the job of coaching and improving them, is he?

The recruitment team includes one of his own men, who he brought in. Doesn't it then also follow that his part in the failure of the recruitment team also reflects on Potter.

And Potter's comments about being happy with what he's got? Assuming he was being the good company man and trying not to make waves, there are plenty of other things to say if you want to protect the feelings of the players we're stuck with after failing to add to them, ad the clubs inaction/inability to get deals done. Managers and clubs up and down the country manage it every window. Then there's also the possibility he wasn't being the company man and he genuinely felt we were all right without additions. If that's the case then there's no blame on the recruitment team, the lack of signing goalscorers is all on Potter.

This isn't to say it's all on Potter.

Yes, the players have to take responsibility for their actions, their choices, their unwilingness/inability to take on what he tries to teach them. The recruitment team (probably) have to take responsibility for the tools Potter has to work with. And Bloom/Barber have to take responsibility for the budget that is available to the recruitment team, and any power structure that they have to work within.

But when Potter's value is meant to be his coaching ability and his improving of the team and working with what he's got, when there's no sign that any of this is being achieved, if the same mistakes are made week after week, then I can't see how you can absolve him of any responsibility.

As I said in another thread, it is a complex web of responsibility. There's is plenty of blame to go around, and no one is blameless for where we are. Except me. It's nothing to do with me.

You are quite right, I think we all groaned yesterday at some of the chances missed.

But accountability has to fall on the manager.

He picks the players who misses these chances. He picks the bench and he picks who plays where and who comes on.

He chooses the system to best suit the players we have.

He also decided to boot out Andone and Locadia without replacements, and our club for whatever reason made no public effort to recruit a striker.

Accountability has to fall on the manager for all the above. I’m open to hearing the case why it shouldn’t.

To go one step further, If you follow your logic through Roy Hodgson should still be at Liverpool (it’s not his fault the players didn’t make top 4) and Pellegrini should still be at Man City (it’s not his fault the players didn’t put a shift in). In fact managers should never be sacked at all!

I am starting to have sympathy with the CH fans in their opinion that he didn’t have enough quality. Potter has got us playing some good attractive stuff but it seems the quality he has is way off for this level required. Neither CH or GP seem able to make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear

At least I’m enjoying this year’s relegation battle though.

Enough has probably been invested in the academy for us to have a half decent team without having to splash out too many millions should we go down. We have tried to sign strikers on the cheap for this level, it has backfired as it is the strikers who have failed us. TB will be much more upset than me if it all goes pear shaped I imagine.

Still keeping the faith though as I rate GP as a manager.

I’m in roughly the same place. The only area in which I disagree is in the entertainment value in this relegation battle. Before Christmas I enjoyed the style of football, even if it did not always translate into positive results. However, ever since Sheffield Wednesday the team has become ponderous and lacking in ideas beyond belief. This is not Potterball anymore and I miss it.

We're not championship yet chap, still in PL fighting till the end

Fans yes, just wish the manager and players would show some fight. CH wasn't exactly animated on the bench but Potter is taking it to another level as he just stands there, arms folded most of the time.
