Have been watching the Wonders of the Universe and have been trying to get me head round how big it actually is. Apparently it would take 100 billion light years to travel from one side to the other whilst if that isn't complicated enough why then am I thinking how long would it take to drive across whilst keeping within the 70mph speed limit.:bigwave:

The bit that blew my mind was when he said how long the universe will last, or until everything stops happening.

Well they say it would take that long to get from one side to the other but in reality, the universe is continually expanding according to the Big Bang Theory but also, if you were travelling at the speed of light you would not notice time pass so you would effectively get to each side instantly.

The one quote that sticks with me (I think it was from that show) is:

"Relatively, removing one atom from the Earth would be far more noticeable than removing the Earth from the Universe."

Over there
The show was great, and spelt out how amazing our universe is. In the last series there was an episode about the death of stars and how all the elements that make up the planet, human beings and pretty much everything in our universe were made in the burning up and explosion of a star. The main element carbon that makes us up, to calcium in our bones to the oxygen we breath. The pure iron core gets heavier and the star burns harder and brighter to survive. Then it gets to a point where the star runs out of steam and goes supernova and emplodes, then explodes and temperatures increase even more and more things are created. Gold is one of the things that Is created, hence the rarity of it.
In the the resulting soup of minerals and gasses the next planets are created. I find this stuff bloody fascinating.
