Anyone watching ? They say do 20 seconds of high intense exercise x 3 and do this 3 times a week which = 3 minutes a week. This will improve Your health. Wow !

It's an odd thing, but I believe the main issue is about releasing the right chemicals in the blood stream. Obviously it's no good as endurance training, but I believe it works for general fitness.

Actually it is good for endurance training if done correctly. What happens is that you immediately exercise in the anaerobic zone whilst exercising in this manner. this increases your anaerobic threshold and gradually that actually also increases your aerobic exercise tolerance. However you also need to exercise aerobically to gain maximum benefit as I understand it.

There is apparently a slightly better way of doing this kind of exercise, called the Tabatta protocol, but it is VERY VERY hard and extremely exhausting if done correctly.

Tabatta training is an an absolute killer.

What this OP refers to is interval training as I understand it.

Intervals where you train close to your maximum expenditure for a brief period, then have a longer period of lower expenditure, then repeat can have great fitness benefits. Plus it has been proven to raise metabolism and burn fat for longer afterwards than "solid state" or classical aerobic training.

An example would be 20 second sprint, 40 second jog and then repeat say 10 times.

Very tiring and very good for you.

nope, watch the programme, you literally just have to do 3 x 20 seconds, three tomes a week. Nothing else.

Yeah. What I meant, but probably phrased badly, is

halbpro said the regime was no good for endurance training and I was saying it is if used in conjunction with aerobic training. The programme as I understand (don't watch tv so haven't seen it) was about how this particular regime is good for specific key indicators - blood fat, insulin etc. NOT overall fitness.

I just don't believe the claims on the TV programme.

I think continual exercise without even a summer break is optimum for athletes ???

I've done quite a lot of lab work on this, it was a good programme in terms of getting the message across. The impact of vigorous exercise on your blood cells, fat and insulin levels, skin cells, bacteria and a whole load of other things is amazing. Add a little bit of that to fruit, veg and water and you are away. No need for really ambitious diets/exercise plans and fitness industry fads. Although there is an element of genetics involved.
