It's all very confusing, two of our most hated rivals have nicknames for us at completly different ends of the spectrum.

Millwall refer to us as 'Nigels'. A view that people named Nigel are usually middle-class mummy boys from leafy suburbs in Surrey and Kent. The sort who would tell the teacher at school about one of the other boys calling them a nasty name. Someone who would piss themselves at the first sign of confrontation.

Brighton on the other hand seem to prefer the term 'Pikey'. A term that would associate us with living in caravans, being a bit filthy, rough around the edges etc. However, you seem to have cottoned on to the Millwall term all of a sudden? Are you super hard like them though? Because you have to make sure you're super hard in order to refer to another clubs fans as 'Nigels'.

Or you will end up looking like the Normans at Charlton.

Ok. Settled. Now another question -- why are 'Herberts' called 'Herberts'?

Two great peoples separated by their common language, etc, etc.

If Palace were posh, which they surely aren't, wouldn't M'wall have called them Ruperts. Nigel is a bit more downmarket these days.

I'm not a fan of "pikey" as stated earlier. It's a nonsensical nickname and only shows to prove the point that our rivalry with you isn't really locally based at all, because there is nothing pikey about most of your fans really. Apart from anything else, most of the more pikey South London football fans tend to the sort of white trash that follow Chelsea - thick racist inbred escort van driving mongs from places like Mitcham and Morden. Chelsea have cleaned up this sector, except in the Millwall enclaves of South London.

As for Palace - their greatest contribution to football culture has been to label the handful of fans that follow Charlton as Normans. A very apt description because it will lend itself well to describing your league one match with them next season as the Nigel v Norman derby.

I'm a Nigel FFS!

Bad enough having the XTC song, Knockoff Nigel, Nigel Havers, that Nigel bloke in the Wild Thornberrys etc. but it can't get worse than this.

BA Flight Attendants refer to pilots as "Nigels".

And friends and family of operating crew who go on trips with them are known as "Klingons"!
