The Team Selection Tonight

Im sorry Gus but this is the first time I have really questioned what on earth you are doing. We are at home and you play THREE defensive midfielders. THREE, against a team who will 9/10 LUMP the ball over there heads anyway. You then decide to play CMS on his OWN against two of the biggest human beings I have ever seen in my life, whilst we intend on keeping the ball between our defenders and adopting a new style of south american HOOF BALL as soon as we get anywhere near the opposition half.

We have no plan B. It is a massive worry to me that time and time again we show no real drive or passion against teams above us or in important games. Yes, we came back from 2-0 down but how woeful were we up until the 1st goal went in? We just seem to start the games as if we are 3-0 up and sitting back. I havent seen us make genuine progress as a footballing side for a while. It's been the same pace and lack of cutting edge for too long. Very concerning.

My thoughts exactly. Gus says we have to start quickly and score first and then picks a team that takes 15 minutes to even get into the opposing half at home. Yes CMS had a bad game but Buckley was woeful and has been for the last three games. He seems to have lost confidence and if Gus thinks he is worth 12m then thats the reason that he can't find a decent striker. His record in signings is hardly great. He has signed some right duffers and it is important that we get these off the books to enable investment in one or two players of quality. The problem is can Gus be trusted to find those two.

Were you at the Forest game? Buckley was on fire - Forest tried two left backs (the first was subbed at half time, the second should have been sent off twice over). We played a high tempo game on Saturday which absolutely started quickly. Sometimes you can't sustain that.....tonight's first half display was woeful, but we showed real spirit in the second half.

Both Forest and Millwall are good sides - frustrating not to win, but no disgrace to draw.

Poyet must use one of the national lottery machines to pick the team. Totally random.

The defence looked weaker than normal, with Bridge just coming back into the side, both Bruno and Calde out, El Abd out of position, and Dunk, a potential disaster in waiting.
I can see what he was thinking, by bolstering the midfield with defensive minded players to drop back and help out.

In the first 20 minutes, the front two, Buckley and CMS, were given free reign to switch left right, center, and Lopez was playing so advanced it may as well have been a front three.
The idea being that the whole team push forward together. It didn't work, largely because the Milwall defence were superbly organised, and with Crofts Hammond and Bridcut in the middle, there was no creativity to thread the ball through onto the runers, who were making space for themselves quite well.
When a through ball was played through, the Brighton player was more often than not bundled off the ball by one of the Millwall man mountains.
The ref gave our front players no protection at all in the first 30 minutes.

Credit to Poyet that he realised the mistake, albeit it took conceding a goal to do it.
Bringing Lua Lua on changed the game completely. Arguably, he should have been on from the start.

Moving Spanish dave to Right Back was a masterstroke.
He looked completely comfortable there, and fortunately, Milwall had nobody speedy enough to get in behind him.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him at RB again at the weekend if Bruno and Calde aren't fit.

The game we played in the first half, and mostly the second half didn't suit CMS at all.
His first touch lets him down time and time again.
He needs to be one of a pair of strikers in a counter attacking team, whare the ball is moves swiftly out from the back into the front two.
We do this very rarely, but when we do, we , and he, look very dangerous.
It didn't happen today at all. He never got the chance to run past the two giant haystacks, and frankly, it was men against boys when the ball was played into our front players.
Had we had a ref. sympathetic to giving freekicks for wrestling, we might have had a hatfull, but this chap seems to think it OK.

Anyway. I can see what he was trying to do. He DID have a plan B, and it almost worked out, but for the woodwork again.

I was despairing in the first half, but encouraged by the second half performance.
Sooner or later it's all going to click.

I got the impression for the first 15 minutes the players had no idea what the formation was at all.

Was gonna reply to this thread, but no need as the above sums up everything I have to say.

Well said mate.

If moving David Lopez to right back, replacing Dunk with KLL, Crofts with Barnes and Bridcutt with Hoskins so that we end up with 6 attack minded players on the pitch, is not a Plan B, then I do not know what is.

The moment I saw the team I knew we were in for a bad night. Bridcutt, Hammond AND Crofts? Come on Gus, you're better than that.
