i know this has probably been mentioned on the 'spain vs russia' thread but i felt so sorry for the russian goalkeeper being sent off like that yesterday. did he touch the ball? did he deserve to go? will uefa reverse the decision? what do you all think?

he slightly touched the ball, it was his instincts to try and stop the ball with his hand, and he seemed to change his mind a tad too late, it was a very harsh decision to send him off, the attacker had already gone passed him so he wasn't stopping a goal,
i think this rule needs to be reviewed, its very harsh on the team, plus it makes the game a tad dull

in slow motion he withdrew his hand very quickly so just imagine how quickly he had to do it at real time. the temptation must have been there. but many times you see slide tckles which end up with the ball hitting the defenders arm yet they dont get in trouble...anyway the sub gk had a blinder!

Yep, poor decision. The ITV numpt was dead wrong when he said he had to go - his intention was to remove his hand, not gain an advantage by knocking it away.

Which reminds me, Marians Parhars used his hands to try and get ahead of the goalkeeper to score and wasn't even booked. He should have been sent off for that.

He should not have been sent off - there was no intent, and any (accidental) contact that there was (a tiny brush, at most) did not change the movement of the ball or in any aid the defending side. In fact, in that situation, I challenge any goalkeeper to have performed better. Unfortunately, I think his back was to the lino, who may just have been able to save him if he had had a clear sight of it.

He deserved to go for that hairstyle if nothing else. Anyone that can make David Seaman's mullet look attractive should be sent off for bringing the game into disrepute!

A very poor decision by the referee, even at full speed were we all certain the keeper had touched the ball with his hand. Even the linesman did not indicate anything. Referee's must be 100% certain at the time & I know for one that I wasn't. The more I saw it the less convincing it was, the ball had actually stopped moving towards the goal before he touched it with his wrist!

Bad Call Ref and cost the Russians dearly. :shootself

He definitely did not touch the ball with his hand. The ball kept on spinning in exactly the same way as before.

The referee was obviously desperate to help Portugal a little bit.

If he is banned from Russia's next (meaningless) match it will be a scandal.

Imagine the arguments if another, more media friendly team had been involved. Mind you I wonder what the Russian press has to say about it.

When I watched the match in real time my first thought was 'what fantastic goalkeeping - he managed to stop it without using his arm'. Even after watching it a number of times I'm still not convinced he touched it, perhaps only with his arm hair?

Just what I thought. Surely any doubt should be given to the 'keeper.

Poor decision IMHO

A split second decision by the referee. We have the benefit of slow motion replays.

The decision was harsh but at first glance it did appear he touched the ball whether accidentally or not.

I do not think that it was a red card but I can sympathise with the ref because everyone I was watching it with shouted 'hand ball' when it happened.

Why did the commentator refuse to change his mind though? perhaps a case of 'I dont want to have to admit I was wrong so will carry on regardless'?

I looked at it carefully on every replay and stick with my first impression which was that he didn't touch it at all, the ref had to have been 100% certain that there was a handball, the ref obviously had clear sight of the incident otherwise he wouldn't have given a red card, sadly for the Russians he was mistaken.

I have always thought that it is harsh to send off a keeper for handling outside the area, whether deliberate or not, whilst a normal outfield player will usually get a yellow.

he did appear to hook his hand over the ball- but could have easily done that when trying 2 get up. its a tough one and ref should have given advantage to the defence, so a yellow but to be fair russia wernt goin to ever score
