Anyone else watching this?

Some genius early episodes of Grandstand on, one with the Duke of Edinburgh somewhat bizarrely introducing bits.

My favourite bit so far is Coleman reading the final scores as they come up for viewers to read...on a typewriter

Oh, and his memorable response to the Battle of Santiago

ONE nil!

They used to have properly famous sportsmen/women on Question of Sport in Coleman's day.

Whereas today's top footballers wouldn't be seen dead on it. A few England cricketers, the odd rugby player, an up & coming athlete, the twunt Tim Lovejoy, but no top footballers. Just retired ones. Never watch it now, Sue Barker is just too annoying, but it really is a different show. Not just for the lack of pastel jumpers.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
If one is going to Knight popular public figures, it is astonishing that Alex Ferguson recieved a knighthood, yet Coleman has been ignored. Makes a mockery of the system.

A cherry nosed, champagne socialist old grump or David Coleman? Tricky one.

I confess I did have to look it up whether he was still alive, as a number of the people on that programme were talking about him like he was dead.

He really was the (annoying) face & voice of sport. Grandstand, MoTD, athletics, Sportsnight with coleman and a Question of Sport.

His mistakes became known as Colemanballs and they are classics.

Some genuine examples from the man himself ...

And there goes Juantorena down the back straight, opening his legs and showing his class

That's the fastest time ever run - but it's not as fast as the world record

A truly international field, no Britons involved.

The Republic of China - back in the Olympic Games for the first time

And the line up for the final of the Women's 400 metres hurdles includes three Russians, two East Germans, a Pole, a Swede and a Frenchman.

Don't tell those coming in the final result of that fantastic match, but let's just have another look at Italy's winning goal.

For those of you watching who do not have television sets, live commentary is on Radio 2.

Both of the Villa scorers - Withe and Mortimer - were born in Liverpool as was the Villa manager Ron Saunders who was born in Birkenhead.

He's 31 this year - last year he was 30.

He won the bronze medal in the 1976 Olympics so he's used to being out in front.

We estimate, and this isn't an estimation, that Greta Waltz is 80 seconds behind.

Linford Christie's got a habit of pulling it out when it matters most.

The late start is due to the time.

He's got his hands on his knees and holds his head in despair.

He's even smaller in real life than he is on the track.

This could be a repeat of what will happen in the European games next week.

It's a battle with himself and with the ticking fingers of the clock.

Here are some names to look forward to - perhaps in the future.

In the Moscow Olympics Lasse Viren came in fifth and ran a champions race.

He just can't believe what's not happening to him.

One of the great unknown champions because very little is known about him.

There'll be only one winner now - in every sense.

He is accelerating all the time. The last lap was run in 64 seconds and the one before that in 62.

(At the velodrome) The front wheel crosses the finishing line, closely followed by the back wheel.

While the others are rightly regarded as classics this one makes sense: if the wind is above a certain speed, then timings don't count for world record purposes. So a race could be run in the fastest time ever but not count as a world record.

Staggering that someone's never heard of him, he used to be ubiquitous: Grandstand, Sportsnight, Question of Sport, Athletics, Football, almost surprised he didn't handle general elections too.

Great stuff brings back a lot of memories.
Indeed it did. They should have done something like that when he retired because for so many of us he WAS the voice of sport. They did it for Murray Walker who was just a motor racing commentator.

It looked like it was done as an obituary piece but as the old bugger's still alive they obviously thought they'd better show it.

I guess it's an age thing. My son's 18 and he hadn't heard of him either.
