To anyone in the public service,strike if you like,but it won't get you far and you know it. Sure i don't want/wish anyone to lose their job. Just sit tight do your job and you will keep it, NOT LIKE MANY IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR.

good point well made. we've had 2 years of "transformation" at my company, those left haven't had a pay rise. welcome to the real world, public sector.

Public sector workers will get a £500 (2 x £250) payment spread over the next 2 years if they earn less than £21k. This is will be more than offset by an increase in pension contributions which will be announced later in the year.

I'm due a pay rise in October which will be 18 months since the last one when we got a massive 12p an hour increase.

Tell that to the 300+ people losing their jobs in our "Quango". With many more likely to come after the spending review in October. The sins of a few management types will lead to many people who just do an honest job losing their jobs.

And if I remember rightly, weren't you whining about lack of support for postmen? Apologies if I have you mixed up with someone else as I can't get search to work but this sneering at "public sector" gets on my tits. The vast majority are people doing an honest job for an honest pay.

Wasted 'bigtime' How often do you see a Pelican crossing 'patrolled' at school time by a Lollypop man ? Those crossings cost the best part of £100K EACH and the have CCTV. Yet we pay someone to 'patrol it' You can see it all around you.

But you are quoting a few isolated incidents when tens of thousands will lose their jobs. I have worked for the NHS, a county council, private sector companies and a Quango. I have been made redundant by the private sector and a Quango. I have seen money wasted by all. I have had pay rise freezes in the private sector and below inflation rises in the Quango.

The simple fact is that the vast majority of those that lose their jobs will not deserve it. The 300 going where I work are auditors and IT staff - not lollipop men or Sir Humphreys.

there was a telling comment by an economist this week. he was saying how the toriess will be looking to the private sector and exports for growth, the unsaid implication being that under labour we have relied on public sector for growth instead. its coming out of the woodwork now, how much of the "economic miricle" was paid for on tick. ohwell, thats the past, hopfully in a few years time we'll all be paying less tax rather than paying for the governemnt overdraft.

The basic issue is the public sector has ballooned out of control in the hands of labour and there is over employment of which the new government can see and find efficiencies.

People might also want to consider what cut backs to key public services will do to the multitude of firms that service the Public Sector - IT, stationery, building firms, and a range of other private companies will all suffer

In true Tory style all the cuts plus VAT rise will, of course, impact most on the least well-off while the wealthy will remain safe from any significant tax rises. We could of course always ask the Banks for our money back...
