Congratulations, BAG. As Richie Benaud would say, "Marvellous effort, that."

Just heard from my step-daughter, who was very excited and forgot to phone me.

3 As, 3 Bs and 5Cs. Way over what she was expecting. I was so chuffed. I nearly started crying - but not too much. I am dead hard when I want to be.

Fantastic stuff, Beatrice...

Is nine the norm for GCSE's now? In my day (bloody hell I'm old) it was ten. And they were a lot harder etc etc etc (insert old folk moaning statments here)

I think that these days the exams are not easier, the way we do them is better:

1...Revision books...those ones from Smiths in every subject are superb

2...The Internet and computers, there is so much more information available and accessible.

3...Continuous assessment, course work that you do throughout your time

In my day it was all down to reading exercise/ text books sitting one exam. If you were ill, it was just tough and you got on with the exam.

Dont get me wrong I am not belittling anything, it just pisses me off knowing how hard Laura has worked for the press and commentators trying to say how easy it has become!!!!!

THE POWERS AT BE OUGHT TO REJOYCE IN THE SKILL OF TODAYS YOUTH NOT ALWAYS BELITTLE THEM

MANY CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE GOT THE GRADES YOU WNATED AND DESERVE ON THIS THREAD. WELL DONE THE LOT OF YOU.

I AM STILL PROUD AS PUNCH!!!!

Hey, I was only taking the mick. As a teacher I know children are getting better at doing exams now than in the past and there is a lot more available to assist them. Also the teachers themselves know how to *coach* the children through the exams better, certainly than when I did my GCSE's 12 years ago.

Bit worried about reports that schools are concentrating on able pupils and leaving the less able to struggle so that they get further up on the league tables, but that's another debate.

Don't want to take anything away from the excellent results we have heard about today. Revel in the achievements.

I know. It was the only year they did it (1998 I think I took mine). I was rubbish at French and got an E. ha ha! Half of an E, what does that make????

It allowed me to get an A in my textiles, Dance and English GCSE's though!

They do every year, although in the Key Stage 2 SAT's, and I'm not suggesting they did this for the GCSE's, the QCA lowered the pass rate for maths by four points allowing more pupils from my school to gain level four.

I personally don't think things are getting easier but students and schools these days are more used to assessments. The Sun and other papers need to take a bit more pride in the results. It's a lose lose situation. Do well and get critised for easy exams, do badly and standards are lowering.

I would agree with that. I took 'O' levels as they were known back in the 60's. I got 7 out of 8 when I took the mock exams. I also started suffering horrendous migraines and during my exams I had to go out frequently to be sick.

In the end I only got English Language with a pass mark.
My course work frequently got good marks especially in French.

Having said that though I have only been unemployed for 4 weeks in my entire life.

dancing , singing and generally making a scene of yourself I think.

She sings enough at the Albion so I would have hoped she would get some recognition!!! LOL

If they're doing exams in "making a fool of yourself in the South Stand after that nice Mr Knight's second goal on a Monday night against QPR at Withdean" I must get back to school pronto
