I know who will lose in the end same as the british car workers and miners who no longer have an industry after giving it away in pursuit of exercising their right to strike and strike and strike or the railway workers who continue to lose market share to alternative means of transport

If it was'nt for industrial action and the threat of further industrial action by railway workers the conditions on the railway would be far worse than they are now for passengers and workers alike.

imagine what it will be like getting your mail 1 hour and 15 mins later than you currrently do.

I'm giving this a lot of thought and struggling to think of what scenario I should be imagining. My post never comes before I leave for work but is here when I come home at the end of the day. I don't know what time it comes at, but I assume it comes mid to late morning. Frankly I don't give a toss when it comes, as long as it comes - 8am, 8pm or sometime in between - makes no odds to me.

Those people should get off their arses and get a job then. Maybe as a postman to replace the workshy lot. Now there's an idea.

lol....Bozza some people work other hours than 9-5.

....including me.

I've not read this thread other than the last page or so, so am not going to wade into the specifics surrounding the strike.

But I had to pick up on your point since the timing of my post arriving really does not make any difference. Electronic communications is fast replacing the need for paper. My credit card company and bank now allow me to take e-statements which pleases me, not least for the green perspective. Some utilities do similar and it's only going to become more prevalent.

I really can't think of anything that I'd need at, say, 9 in the morning that I couldn't wait until 9 in the evening for. Or wait until the next day for that matter.

So if you have any tickets for a concert/footie match or packets you don't mind when you get them?

Not really, no.

The implication of your post (forgive me if I'm wrong) is that if they don't arrive 'today' then I won't be able to go to the game/gig. If anyone is sending out tickets that have to arrive by 9am next day in order that their customer can go to an event then they are doing something wrong. I honestly do not believe I have ever been relying on tickets arriving the day of the event.

(And, slightly off-topic, the tickets I've received recently have not arrived from the Royal Mail anyway)

I doubt that all the post that i'm waiting for won't all arrive until next weekend, but apart from dvd's etc... the only thing that i'm really waiting for is train tickets but the trip isn't too december so i'm going to be slagging of the posties just yet.

But does seem to me that most businesses have evolved into the 21st century, like 24 hour shopping but the postal serive is going backwards

Part of the strings that are attached to the pay deal means that the night shift will virtually disappear so that RM dont need to pay any night allowance. Early starts will be later and have a knock on effect so most people wont get their mail until late afternoon as the business mail will get priority. When they have got rid of 40000 with modernisation plans , RM will casualise deliveries with agency staff which means that they wont complete their walks because their shift has finished and they will just dump it back into the nearest postbox.

Night shifts in mail centres will not dissappear as the mail still needs to be sorted in the machines, the machines that I maintain. I think you mean the night shifts will dissappear in the delivery offices.
I can't understand though why they want to make the delivery staff start later when as I said before 60% of mail is ready in mail centres to go to delivery offices at midnight?!!!

British Bulldog, you are wasting your breath on people like Severnside Gull they exaggerate to extremes to give the unions a bad name.

Yes , I meant the night shifts in the delivery offices. John Byrne's post (post no.100) confirms that delivery staff will start later thus eliminating night allowance for the first hour of duty. In the summer when Annual Leave is taken the shortfall wont be done on overtime but will be covered by doing 6 rounds instead of 5.

I realise that the postmen are being treated shabbily, but things do have to change now that there is more competition. Stopping me getting my mail for 5 days will not make me think any better on the situation.

My brother got out the post office at the right time, methinks. He was a postie and then he used to drive the lorries between Gatwick and Worthing. The Royal Mail absolutely shafted them with threats of relocating staff, pissing about with contracts - especially Christmas hours/bonuses etc. Very nasty people ,the RM management.

My family have proudly had 3 generations of posties. Who'd be a postie now?

Must have been taking lessons from BT management who introduced outsourcing and then found out they could make more cuts by offshoring.
