Being born and raised in Brighton there were and still are many pubs in Brighton. It was said that there were 365 - one for every day of the year!!!!

I can remember many pubs that are no more for a variety of reasons. They've been demolished;used for another purpose;changed their name. etc.

Using these categories:

1) Demolished..Maytree (Old Shoreham Rd Hove) springs to mind. Made way for a row of 'gated' houses. Dog Tray (Edward Street Brighton). That used to be somewhere near the Law Courts/DWP buildings. A mate of mine recently said there were loads in the area aroumd Edward Streetthat were demolished to make way for road widening and new buildings. Where Churchill Square now stands there were terraces (of houses) and apparently 'every street had it's corner pub'. There was the Clarence in North Street Portslade that had a reputation as a bikers' pub. I rememeber it as a Sunday lunch time watering hole where they put on strippers. Martin Chivers who was on loan from Spurs was in there one Sunday.

2) Used for another purpose..Halfway House (Boundary Road Portslade) was being used as a dog-grooming parlour the last time I passed by. I used to have a drink with Sully in there when he was working across the road in the Hire Shop. Whitehawk Inn being used as a Community Centre the last time I went by.

3) Change of name..Aldrington(Portland Road Hove) now the Westbourne. Railway(Portslade Station) now the Whistlestop:annoyed:. Golden Cross(Portland Road Hove) now the Jaimaca Inn? My dad knew it as the Mansfield. Wonder what it'll be next?

Half the pubs in West Street have changed from my ealy drinking days. The Bosun can't remember what that's called now. The Sackville (Sackville Rd Hove) ahd a nightclub/disco called BooBoo's. That became the Seagull Tavern (did the door there in late 80's on a football saturday. Now called the Hove Park.

What happened to:

The Abinger on Brighton seafront. Great pub in the 70's for music etc.
The Spotted Dog (Middle Street Brighton I think) where a rather naive me first encountered the Brighton Gay Scene. A bunch of us mod boys off to Sherrys for a night out. Served by an openly effeminate man. Never knew homosexuality existed at 16. The Hop Poles is down that road somewhere, but can't think what that was before. Henneky's was also brilliant for a pre-club beer. Then there was the Stable somewhere near Morley Street Brighton. Don't know what happened to that. Used to go there before the Birds' Nest which became Dalrymples which became the Gloucester nightclub.

Could go on but just so many to think of.

The infamous Spotted Dog is now the Hop Poles.

White Admiral in Bevendean is long gone, replaced by flats. The Ship in Lewes Road, famous for it's strippers, now is used by the Uni for non drinking purposes. The Race Hill, at the bottom of Elm Grove, has been empty for a couple of years.
