Carlisle Utd manager ends dispute with Brighton boss Gus Poyet
By Barry Pittaway
Greg Abbott has called a truce in his war of words with Brighton rival Gus Poyet as the two managers prepare to clash at Brunton Park this weekend.
Greg Abbott
The Carlisle United boss and his Seagulls counterpart were embroiled in a dispute over the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy after Poyet called for the competition to be scrapped.
Abbott responded by accusing the Uruguayan of “demeaning” the competition, adding: “How can he make a statement like that?”
But both managers say they have now resolved their differences over the phone and are on good terms ahead of this weekend’s League One clash.
Abbott said: “He [Poyet] rang me up a bit concerned that the press were trying to ignite a bit of a feud.
“All he said on the phone were complimentary things about what we are doing, and vice versa.
“We all have different opinions on things. We have swapped views and agreed that we are both right.”
Poyet, meanwhile, said it was Abbott who made the call, but agreed that the issue was now in the past.
“He called me afterwards. He said he didn’t talk about me, he talked about my opinion, so it has all settled down,” said Poyet.
“He didn’t give an opinion on what I should or should not say, and said it was taken out of context.
“There is no problem at all between us. I said to him it is good enough for me that you have called me.”
About also commented about Saturdays opponents "They (Brighton) are a decent side, hardworking and like to try and play the game like us, the right way. We're flying at the moment though and shouldn't fear anyone coming here, we will respect them but we know we can, if we continue to play as we have been, beat them."
Abbott was due to check on captain Paul Thirlwell today, with the midfielder battling to be fit for Saturday’s game after suffering a knee injury in last weekend’s win at Sheffield Wednesday.
Former United, Workington and Barrow hitman Glenn Murray, from Maryport, is the visitors star man and looks likely to spearhead their attack on Saturday.
Pittaways Prophecy:
Saturday promises to be a fantastic occasion at a raucous Brunton Park with two of the form horses of League One locking horns. Anyone with a Saturday afternoon to spare should heed Greg Abbots plea for more support, and expect to be royally entertained. Brighton are starting to pick up some form but with home advantage I expect the Blues to nudge it.
