I think if the reasoning for the colour change/'update' was much clearer, there'd be far less outrage and division.
For example, I think something like this would have cleared everything up and most(?) people would have been content, imo:

The previous shirt had a miniature England flag on the back of the neck, this has been removed, presumably by some woke wally at the FA and replaced with some meaningless rectangle that most patriotic English people aren’t in favour of. These people include the Prime Minister and the Leader of The Opposition and numerous other distinguished and eloquent individuals from all elements of the political and social spectrum.
What’s genuinely depressing is the ability of so many people to succeed in starting a fight, on their own in a phone box.
Or the times we had no crosses at all?

The real story on this shirt was the horrific, unjustifiable and astonishing price of the garment.
Nike have managed to stoke up so much gammon-anger that many have forgotten this original headline news. It’s almost like they planned it by tricking the thickest c***s in the Country to force the media dial away from their vile profiteering.

To me this is the classic minor issue that gets magnified by social media and the perma-offended snowflakes.
Rates as about a 2 out of 10 on my give a f*** o'metre, if pushed for an opinion I would say I prefer my George's cross red. Social media demands we have an opinion on everything so this somewhat clumsy attempt at inclusivity is now a massive discussion.
I have a suggestion to lighten the red on the St George's cross to reflect the angry glow of those triggered by changes to it . . . except if they cover it in their nationalistic nonsense

We all know why
Because they've glanced at it, seen different colours and incorrectly interpreted it as a nod to the rainbow flag (despite it only having maybe 3 colours that match), used it as a chance to use the word "woke" again despite having no idea what it means..and then instead of admitting it isn't actually what they thought, they've then instead doubled down by claiming the flag should never be tampered with, despite it having been done several times over, probably on shirts they wore themselves.
