The new climate change scandal

FRESH doubts were cast over controversial global warming theories yesterday after a major climate change argument was discredited.

Looks like the Climate change camp may have been lying and promoting the theory just for financial gain rather than basing their work on any real scientific evidence, maybe those who doubt any changes are down to man but actually due to natural cycles will be taken a little more seriously from now on?

Its down to natural cycles, imo, which have been happening for thousands of years rather than man made influences, but the Climate change / Global warming bandwaggon is a money spinner thats been too good an opportunity for some to pass up.

THE NEW CLIMATE CHANGE SCANDAL

Glacier melt claims were 'speculation'
Monday January 18,2010
By Anil Dawar
FRESH doubts were cast over controversial global warming theories yesterday after a major climate change argument was discredited.

The International Panel on Climate Change was forced to admit its key claim that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The report was based on an interview with a little-known Indian scientist who has since said his views were “speculation” and not backed up by research.

It was also revealed that the IPCC’s controversial chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, described as “the world’s top climate scientist”, is a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics and no formal climate science qualifications.

Dr Pachauri was yesterday accused of a conflict of interest after it emerged he has a network of business interests that attract millions of pounds in funding thanks to IPCC policies. One of them, The Energy Research Institute, has a London office and is set to receive up to £10million from British taxpayers over the next five years in the form of grants from the Department for International Development.

Dr Pachauri denies any conflict of interest arising from his various roles.

Yesterday, critics accused the IPCC of boosting the man-made global warming theory to protect a multi-million pound industry.

Climate scientist Peter Taylor said: “I am not surprised by this news. A vast bureaucracy and industry has been built up around this theory. There is too much money in it for the IPCC to let it wither.”

Professor Julian Dowdeswell, a glacier specialist at Cambridge University, said: “The average glacier is 1,000ft thick so to melt one even at 15ft a year would take 60 years. That is a lot faster than anything we are seeing now so the idea of losing it all by 2035 is unrealistically high.”

The IPCC was set up by the UN to ensure world leaders had the best possible scientific advice on climate change. It issued the glacier warning in a benchmark report in 2007 that was allegedly based on the latest research into global warming.

The scientists behind the report now admit they relied on a news story published in the New Scientist journal in 1999. The article was based on a short telephone interview with scientist Syed Hasnain, then based in Delhi, who has since said his views were “speculation”.

The New Scientist report was picked up by the WWF and included in a 2005 paper.

It then became a key source for the IPCC which went further in suggesting the melting of the glaciers was “very likely”.

Yesterday, Professor Murari Lal who oversaw the chapter on glaciers in the IPCC report, said: “If Hasnain says officially that he never asserted this, or that it is a wrong presumption, then I will recommend that the assertion about Himalayan glaciers be removed from future IPCC assessments.”

Last year the Indian government issued its own scientific research rejecting the notion that glaciers were melting so rapidly.

Before the weakness in the IPCC’s research was exposed, Dr Pachauri dismissed the Indian government report as “voodoo science”.

The revelations are the latest crack to appear in the scientific consensus on climate change.

It follows the so-called climate-gate scandal in November last year when leaked emails from the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit appeared to show scientists fiddling the figures to strengthen the case for man-made climate change.

The scandal prompted critics to suggest that many scientists had a vested interest in promoting climate change because it helped secure more funding for research.

But to invert your argument, there are plenty of countries/corporations who have a decidedly vested interest in proving global warming ISN'T happening too (oil companies or car manufacturers, for example), therefore those who argue it isn't happening have no more of a vested interest than those who say it is.

High up on the South Downs.
If the Daily Express says so it must be true.

mmm methinks there are a lot more rich and influential people who have huge vested interests in ignoring evidence of global warming.

It makes me laugh that plenty of people took a few days of cold weather last week as irrefutable proof that global warming is not happening.

Climate change, if it's happening, is measured in years and decades, not days. A couple of weeks of snow would not not render all those arguments statistically irrelevant :dunce:

I'm sure the Express will reveal the truth soon, that climate change is caused by asylum seekers.

My theory is that man made climate change is coincidentally occurring alongside a cyclical change , only one of them can be altered to a certain degree.

official global temperature measurements indicate that the earth has not warmed since 2000, is currently cooling, and looks set to continue cooling for the next couple of decades

Peter Taylor is a science analyst and policy advisor with over 30 years’ experience as a consultant to environmental NGOs, (particularly Greenpeace) government departments and agencies, intergovernmental bodies, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the UN. His range of expertise stretches from pollution and accident risk from nuclear operations, chemical pollution of the oceans and atmosphere, wildlife ecology and conservation, to renewable energy strategies and climate change. Unlike many modern environmentalists, he puts great emphasis on the wider aspects of human existence, such as community, empowerment, leisure, enjoyment of nature and spirituality. He is concerned about the increasing tendency to put environmental considerations above human aspects.

As we should all know by now, the majority of politicians, the media, every image-conscious corporation and the major environmental groups seem to be uniting in presenting an unequivocal message: climate change is real, the earth is getting warmer, mankind’s production of carbon dioxide is the cause and humanity must work flat out to mitigate the effects by setting targets to reduce carbon emissions, capture carbon from the atmosphere, control human activities through international laws, carbon taxes, carbon quotas, carbon trading and so on in order to prevent planetary catastrophe. Further, we are frequently being told that the science is settled and there is a consensus of the leading scientists on the matter.

Unfortunately there is one slight problem with this picture: it is not true! – There is no consensus of scientists, the climate is now cooling, most of the proposed measures will have precious little beneficial effect on climate and will, in fact most likely be detrimental to community, economy and even the very environment that we are hell-bent on saving. Peter Taylor proposes a plausible alternative theory and sets out sensible measures based on no-regrets policy changes and resilience in the face of the many and varied possible challenges we face - warming or cooling climate, as well as potential, and very likely, environmental, economic and sociological crises.

He shows us that the official global temperature measurements indicate that the earth has not warmed since 2000, is currently cooling, and looks set to continue cooling for the next couple of decades at least, with potentially far more serious consequences for human society than a warming scenario (failed crops for example). Further, many of the currently proposed policies will make things worse instead of better.

Er, "Climate change" has been happening for 6 billion years - up and down, why have the green lobby suddenly stopped calling it "Global warming"?

I smell a badly disguised fart

Not only that but I see there is yet more snow forecast this week. A final nail in the coffin of so-called global warming. In your face science!

Isn't Peter Taylor also trying to promote a theory for financial gain? Why should he be believed any more than a scientist with the opposite opinion?

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
official global temperature measurements indicate that the earth has not warmed since 2000, is currently cooling, and looks set to continue cooling for the next couple of decades

There may well be periods of cooling, but a decade is not a decent yardstick, is it? There is a trend of rising temperatures and there has been an increase in the standard upward trend since the middle of the last century.

"Calendar year 2008 was the coolest year since 2000, according to the Goddard Institute for Space Studies analysis [see ref. 1] of surface air temperature measurements. In our analysis, 2008 is the ninth warmest year in the period of instrumental measurements, which extends back to 1880 (left panel of Fig. 1). The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008. The two-standard-deviation (95% confidence) uncertainty in comparing recent years is estimated as 0.05°C [ref. 2], so we can only conclude with confidence that 2008 was somewhere within the range from 7th to 10th warmest year in the record."

We can go on all night throwing quotes and links about, but I fail to see how 'going green' is going to end society. It has many, MANY positives.

Why play things by chance and end up saying "Oh, they were right all along. We were burning up. Better send our apologies to those that live on and near the Equator".

But it's happening FARFARFAR faster than ever before. There isn't one respected scientific institution that denies anthropogenic climate change, get over it.
