IMO Iwelumo would have made a big difference to our side at the moment, at least hed hold the ball up get into scoring positions and give Leon someone to play off.

BIG mistake letting him go, hes been in exactly this position with Stoke when they stayed up and knows what its all about. Everyone who was slating him and happy when he left were being extrememly short sighted, id have him over Molango anyday!

We did not let him go. he pissed off after agreeing to talk about a contract. yeah he was ok for us but what he did was wrong and I don't want to see anyone without honour playing for the stripes

Bollocks, he wanted to come and we refused to pay his relocation package. Wouldve probably been a few grand, are we really reduced to that?

Dan, how do you know it was a big mistake. We don't know his wage demands, and his conduct towards the club was downright rude. f*** him. We'll find loan players better than him in the course of the season.

While I think that the team would benefit from having a decent target man, Iwelumo never really impressed me. I think now we have moved up a division he would have looked out of his depth and made little positive impact.

Not having a targetman is a disaster. We had one in Iwelumo. He wasn't the greatest of players but he was better than Kerekes and better than having NONE AT ALL.

You just had to hear the desperation in McGhee's voice tonight about his futile efforts to find such a player to know how worried he is about this MASSIVE problem.

We have had to totally change the way we play this season compared to last because of the loss of ONE player.

This squad was not good enough to play passing football in Div 2 last season - McGhee's masterstroke was realising that and adopting more direct methods.

Yet he now has to play passing football in Div 1 because we have no targetman. Yet this is still essentially the same squad of footballers who weren't good enough to outpass Div 2 teams!

Watching our back 4 and centre midfield attempting to build from the back tonight was an exercise in torture. They are not good enough to do it.

We need to get the targetman back, rebuild the defensive screen in midfield and get our back 4 hitting long balls into the targetman's channels again rather than embarrassing themselves by holding on to the ball for too long and playing us into trouble.

He basically wanted a house which in Brighton costs a hell of a lot more than a few grand. Yes I agree we need a target man but not at a cost that would put us deep in financial trouble.

Could not agree more. I know people dislike the long-ball game but at the end of the day, a team should always play to its strengths. When Iwelumo came in last season, he made a huge difference and I don't think we'd have got promoted without him. I know he wasn't the greatest footballer on earth, but he allowed us to play a style of football that suited out hard-working but not particularly skillful squad.

Now, if he was making excesive wage demands, then I agree that the club should not be held to ransom and that we were right to let him go. To be honest, I don't know the circumstances behind his departure. However, the priority now has to be to find another target man so that we can start playing the type of football that got us promoted last year and might just save us from relegation this time.

Teams hated coming to Withdean last season, not because they were afraid that they'd get torn apart by our flowing, free-scoring football, but because we were so hard to break down and so hard to beat.

Glad to see McGhee is agreeing with all of you about a target man.

this mornings Argus back-page headline

"Target man top of McGhee's list"

A pertinent quote from MM though:

"I cannot see where we are going to find this player. We have got very limited resources. We have been working overtime and we are still trying. The chairman, myself, and the staff are out lloking and talking to people to find a centre-forward that can galvanise us into a better team."

Iwelumo was a f***ing Donkey, I dont think I've seen a player with that little ball control and close skill since the darkest days of the Goldstone and Gillingham.

regardles of his conduct he wasnt good enough

he may be slightly better playing under a manager who put him in position though . . . .like in the reserves or on the bench ! :lolol:

Lumo the GOD that he was, was basically shit...about the only thing he done for us was score as couple and do "that" run into the box in the final. Other than that he first touch was laughable (phrase "Touch of a rapist" comes to mind), whenever he did ahve the ball at his feet he just ran straight into players or as at away to Swindon straight off the f***ing pitch ?!?!

Funnily enough Iwelumo said in yesterday's Argus that he would still like to join the Albion
