Saw Lankum last night.

They performed their False Lankum album in its entirety. I understand this gig was a bit different, in both in performance and with choice of venue, the beautiful 1895 Theatre Des Westerns, to what they usually serve up. The band actually joked about the venue being fancy and hoped everyone was okay with it.

As previously mentioned I wasn’t overly keen on the album, thought it good but not as remarkable as others, including Mercury, Ivor Norvello and virtually every respectable end-of-year list, but a friend invited me and decided to go.

What can I say, I’m a convert. It was remarkable, it was emotional, the crowd were focused. The 4 band members were joined by a drummer, from Gilla Band, plus their producer. Sound was superb, delicate and intricate at times. Vocal harmonies quiet but uplifting and strong. Band were chatty and playful.

I listened to a few album tracks when I came home, their recorded music sounds different now. I sometimes find this, that a live performance affects how I receive recorded output.

I, on the other hand, am an enormous fan of False Lankum, and am yet to see it live. I'd want it to be incredibly live and, if so, it'd have the kind of effects you get at, eg, Godspeed gigs

The guy I was with made the same Godspeed connection last night during one part of the show.

I think the album coheres as an album more than so many collections of songs. The fugues knit the whole together wonderfully.

I’d go for Honeyglaze purely based on the Pretty Girls song which there was a link to on the Albums thread. It’s grand, having an English Teacher feel to it.
Overall that’s a great great line up. I’m seeing Crack Cloud next Wednesday at Chalk. Before that it’s Nick Cave supported by Dry Cleaning. I fly back early on the Saturday morning and then straight up from Gatwick to Chelsea.

One for next year. Iron Maiden at the Ernst Happel Stadion In Vienna booked up.

Just bought tickets for Shannon and the Clams, Nov 5th in Islington. Saw them last year and they were superb. Also got tickets to take my daughter to see the Lambrini Girls in Brixton. My daughter called me from college panicking that the tickets go on sale at 10. She's so scarred by Wembley ticket purchases. The gig is next April.
Cud were excellent last Friday!

Saw Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds on Friday. If anyone has tickets for any tour date then you’re in for a huge treat. Dry Cleaning were in support. I’ve seen them play in many different sized venues but this would be the largest. They managed to hold their own, playing a few new tracks plus favourites Scratch Card Lanyard and Gary Ashby. Fantastic guitar playing as always but slightly lost on the larger stage and the reduced P.A.
After a half hour break it was the main event. Most of the songs you would want to hear were present, punctuated throughout the set by every song from the amazing new album. Highlights were a cracking Red Right Hand and a beautiful rendition of I Need You which had a slightly different ending to the version on Skeleton Tree. No one dared utter a word as this particular one was played. The show had so much energy with Cave almost snarling the lyrics as he sang- but in a good way. Two and a half hours is pretty impressive for a 67 year old. Long may it continue.

Saw The The at the Ally Pally on Saturday. very good. played new album from start to finish for the first half - better than the album as there was no annoying female backing singer.
The second half was a number of earlier hits which got the crowd dancing and singing. Finished with Uncertain smile and Giant.
Busy standing venue - about 10k people all over the age of 40.

train home was a bitch
