It's a two part programme, on again at the same time next week.

There were nearly 30 veterans alive when they started filming the show in 2003, since then a number of them have passed on. Sobering viewing, what a soft world we now live in. We'll never, ever be able to repay them.

The guy who said his real Remembrance Day was 22 Sept made me cry. Heroes, each and every one of them.

Buy a poppy!

Never has the "They will not grow old, as we are that are left grow old" eulogy meant so much to me as hearing it from a 100+ year old veteran. That the events have the power to move these men to tears after 85 years is testament to the enormity of what those boys were asked to do.

The term hero is an overused one theses days, but those veterans really define the word. Very humbling to listen to their stories.

I couldn't believe how those guys showed no bitterness toward the enemy that killed so many of their comrades. It was like everyone was in the same god awful boat, them and us. Very moving and really highlights the futility of war, what a complete waste of life.

NO!!!
Didn't you watch the programme last night then? They were only ordinary men, both the Germans & the British. Neither side wanted to be there.
What about the guy who recalled the Christmas Day cease fire & the football match which ended when the ball was punctured on barbed wire.
Last night one of the guys laid a wreath on a German soldier's grave. I believe Part 2 next week is to show a reunion between one of the Tommies & his German 'enemy'.
Much respect to all of them. I found the whole programme most emotional throughout. Great television.

These are the guys who should be called legends . Legends is a much over used term but fitting for these sort of heroes.

I thougt it was very moving. Puts the antics of some of our folk today to shame I am sorry to say.

Those who fought in both World Wars are heroes and we have treated them shamefully as a nation. No counselling or therapy in those days and no real help when they came home. Many of them have had to struggle on a pittance of a pension.

Grateful thanks to them all. May they all Rest in Peace when their own battle is over.

We can all learn a valuable lesson from them. They put their own lives on the line to protect this country and we owe them everything. Its a shame more people don't take notice of our history. The younger generation of this country need to be given every chance to learn about what the wars were all about.

We can all do our bit, particularly by supporting organisations such as the Royal British Legion etc. by buying a poppy.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!!!!

Absolutely right about the education of the younger generation. Stuff like that should be shown in schools as part of history lessons.

Instead, too many people/agencies are out there re-writing essential parts of our history to suit political correctness.

Those heroes made the ultimate sacrifice in a time when the world and society was much different. Genuinely wonder what they think of the way it all turned out, the modern world and society as it stands today.

I watched it last night. Fascinating program.

Felt very sorry for the young soldier who was wounded and his place was taken by his friend. His friend was killed and when the young soldier went to pay his respects to his friend's family he was shunned by the deceased's sisters!

They blamed him for their brother's death!!

Isn't there some amazing stat that the first 4 years of fighting moved the main trench line only a couple of miles.
