On a related note I think the problem in certain industries is actually class rather than/or in combination with the colour of your skin.

It's relatively easy these days to correct a problem where your workforce is out of step with ethnicity in the country.

Far more difficult to admit that the problem is actually which school you went to or what your parents did or knew.

Or to put it brutally our workforce is just a bit too posh.

I do understand (and support) schemes like the Rooney Rule to encourage (and not positively discriminate) people to apply.

But I do worry they are being used in certain places to sweep a quite different problem under the carpet.

I agree, when do we ever hear about class in respect of diversity.

That is what is so depressing about this case, if there was one institution that would place class at the front and centre of its approach to diversity it should be the Labour Party.

What is worse, (as if could get worse) is that those who approved this approach thought this would be a good idea at a time that the Labour Party is treated with suspicion by the white working class.

Unbelievable.

Just to clarify - I didn't say white working class. If you discriminate based on class that encompasses a number of races.

To put in another way - there is a potential to tick all the diversity boxes (Asian, Black, Women, Sexuality) but leave (for instance) young black (and white) working class males and Asian women at the back of the list.

Certain obvious industries seemingly "doing the right thing" (or being politically correct if you view it like that) are miles behind others that have a more sophisticated idea of giving a leg up.

For instance there are some big city lawyers who take young people from some very difficult backgrounds and ensure they get a qualification/apprenticeship of sorts, even if that is working in the reprographics department.

Regardless of politics some people you get the feeling aren’t decent human beings and I strongly get that feeling about Jeremy Corbyn. It’s a shame, labour were once a decent political party with the right values but not any more, now controlled by extremists

I didn’t say that you did?

I am merely addressing the very obvious problem Labour has amongst the white working class, which frankly will only be resolved when they understand the problem. And before you accuse me of racism, the Labour Party already know they have a problem.....

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/45434...nto-power-without-white-working-class-voters/

This is why when the likes of Lady Nugee very publicly takes the piss out of a working class house, or when Diane Abbott and Charibati send their kids to private fee paying schools, or when the kids of Blair, Jack Straw, Neil Kinnock, Two Jags etc get a leg up in lucrative political careers, or when Labour grandees now apologise for the negative impact on wages for the unskilled workers caused by EU freedom of movement after years of ignoring it..........the native white working class roll their eyes and move further away from ever associating themselves with the Labour Party.

This issue is therefore just another chapter in that process of where the wealthy middle class ersatz Labour supporters take a shit on the poor white working class, and this website is chock full of the same condescending attitudes.

The NASTY RACIST BRIGHTON & HOVE LABOUR PARTY - are now ante-beach hut owners!
Push this through & will only be the rich that will be able to afford them!

What a NASTY party they have become

Fascinating! Not sure who the first guy is but came across as the voice of reason. The labour rep was doing well with the other side of the argument until he declared that if you can raise £25k without a mortgage you are effectively fair game. Not the über rich, not google but normal people who may have through hard work, diligence, saving, entrepreneurship etc and having paid their taxes, may have a bit extra to spend on themselves or their families. It begs the question, under labour what's going to be the point?

Class is important I agree. It’s referred to as social mobility, and is equally important as BAME and LGBTQIA (to use the full acronym.)

Too many people suffer from a lack of opportunity or access due to class and it is part of the same conversation organizations have around BAME.

The first guy is Robert Nemeth. He is a Conservative Councillor for Wish Ward & is opposed to the exhorbitant increase in taxes for selling Beach Huts.

This. Having voted labour in the past I don't recognise this party. What baffles but also really worries me is that so many people are willing to overlook the endemic racism (particularly anti semitism) that pervades. I don't want an MP that fiddles his expenses for a duck house or one that is racist or Marxist. But if I HAD to choose......

Depends on your point of view, in my view class transcends race, gender, sexual preference etc. and yet it is never given the same profile.

That makes no sense, which is why this focus by the Labour Party on BAME is wrong headed, because it is 2 fingers to the white working class.

The Labour Party are shooting themselves in the foot on this, and not for the first time either.

the Labour Party is treated with suspicion by the white working class..

As a white working class person myself I can’t say I treat them with suspicion.

I’m not sure what this has got to do with anything. Why do you ask?

As you well know, class was traditionally defined by the kind of employment one had. You state that you are working class, do you do manual labour as the major part of your paid occupation?

It's a lot more to do with what your parents and grandparents did as jobs and class have blurred over the last two decades.

I partially disagree. I feel class is more defined by your values, traditions and beliefs. And mine are firmly working class.

PS I have very sensitive skin so I’m unable to do manual labour as my hands chaff.
