Not really my sort of film , too young to really have any strong feelings one way or the other about her.

Some films have the capacity to tell the real story behind historical events such as Apollo 13, Gandhi..... others tell one persons vision or interpretation of what actually occured such as The Passion of the Christ or, Braveheart..... This, however, is a historical event which needs NO re-telling.

Can someone that "hates" Maggi explain why specifically. Unless you are all Union officials or Northern, most of us people that live in the southern part of the Country and even a fair few further north are better off, home owners and their country has a better standing in the world because of the things she did for this country.
Most of the dyed in the wool lefties on here appear to be old enough to have been around to witness first hand Maggi's terms in office and able to make a value judgement, some though are much to young to have even been able to buy their own alcohol at the time so where do all the vitriolic opinions come from.

Thatcher made changes to the supply side of the economy, and although there were some benefits, these were skewed to the rich. She benefited from having Labour as an unelectable mess during most of her tenure.

Union reforms are often trumpeted by her fans, and there is no doubt that these were necessary. It is a shame though that the legacy of structural reform and the oil tax revenues of her premiership was squandered on unemployment benefits and overtime for police officers.

There were two problems with industry in the 70's, unions and management, she only dealt with the first, and created the culture of greed and complacency that still exists in the latter,

I will wait to read the critics comments on the film before i decide to see it, I have never voted Tory but having lived through her period as premier I hope it clearly shows the way she saved us from the huge problems if the unions had won the day, we would have been in the same situation as Greece is in today.

Very interesting coverage in tonight's Standard. Well worth reading - http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/film/article-24009970-the-ladies-are-for-turning-how-maggie-seduced-meryl---and-reduced-me-to-tears.do

Probably, but then I tend to go watch a lot of movies, even ones I know I'm not going to like. The benefits of the unlimited card...

I was a Manager in the early 70's. In the latter half of the 70's I gave up working for the Man and became self employed.
My take on the situation at the time was that Management were not allowed to manage by the unions, therefore there was no investment in manufacturing industry plant or infrastructure. Catch 22.
Once the Unions were broken, investment was put in R&D and plant, not to support the old industries against which a loosing battle had been fought for a long time, but new smaller specialised manufacturing.
The old industries were ultimately lost not because of the Unions but World competition from Japan initially and then every other country that could provide cheaper labour costs.
As to creating a culture of greed, to do that you have to provide peoples access to the prize. Did you not buy any BT shares or have any money in Mutual Building Societies.
At the end of the day for me the major thing to emerge from her Premiership was the standing of this country as a world player. To having a similar status that Greece has at the moment with the World Bank dictating Government Policy to a country that felt good about itself and was listened to in the World.

Because at least one of their parents fed them propaganda to "ate the Tories", free enterprise, bosses, and to admire the 1960's and 1970's when industrial disputes and crap products meant the UK fell massively down the world ladder of incomes. Great parenting.

Love her or hate her, she was the last PM that wasn't an American lapdog.....in my opinion anyway!

Didn't she apparantly say "Don't wobble George" when trying to persuade Bush the elder into a full blown invasion of Iraq during the first Gulf War??

An iron lady indeed! Should be a an interesting flick.

We need a Thatcher now not the Ted Heath type we have.

Some of you may rejoice over maggies leadership, it was necessary but boy was it bloody minded at times.

Probably give it a miss.

I've read a lot about her time in power and I know I'll struggle at times thinking.. that didn't happen or at least in that order.

The bits I'm seen re-enacting her discussions with the military top brass prior to the Falklands appear somewhat different to the various accounts I've read from people who were there.

Anyway, each to his own. I'm sure those on here who already have a fictionalised memory of her time in power will enjoy a further revision.
