The imagination of Hollywood

Over to James Alexander Gordon for this summer's cinema releases:

Die Hard 4, Fabulous Four 2
Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Shreck 3
Oceans 11 3, Hostel 2
Harry Potter 5, Rush Hour 3

The top 6 films at the UK box office this week are ALL sequels

and when they're not turning out sequels they're making films based on TV programmes or rehashing 'high concept' flicks - Evan Almighty anyone?

looking at what's soming up this summer reveals Wil Smith vehicle 'I Am Legend' as one of the summer blockbusters in which Will plays scientist Robert Neville the last man on Earth - tagline "The Last Man on Earth Is Not Alone" - without spoiling the plot for anyone it does look to bear certain similarities to 1971's 'Omega Man' in which Charlton Heston plays scientist Robert Neville, the last man on Earth - tagline "The Last Man on Earth is Not Alone" which in turn bore certain similarities with with 1964's 'The Last Man on Earth' with Vincent Price as scientist Robert MORGAN in the titular role

to summarise, from what I can see the only big summer movie that isn't based on an old TV hit and isn't a sequel is a remake of a remake

oh and then there's 'Hairspray'

and 'The Bourne Ultimatum'

Are you suggesting that Hollywood is too scared to take risks anymore and are content to play to popular culture by rehashing what has been rehashed before & serverd with chips & a side salad???

and indeed I did enjoy Die Hard 4. It's just I love movies but I like a bit of a suprise when I sit down to watch a film - looking at this summer I know exactly what I'm going to get from ALL of the big films being released

so far this year the only decent new 'original' films that I've seen have been Zodiac and Sunshine and both of them were pretty standard genre flicks

I want a 'V For Vendetta' or a 'Children Of Men' or a 'Little Miss Sunshine' or a 'Memento' and I just don't think it's going to happen

:(

The major hollywood studios for a very longtime are scared to take an option on a brilliant book or screenplay as they would probably lose money on it.

Wheras the British film industry ( and american independants to be fair) are producing far more compelling and original films.

Hollywood has a formula & is sticking to it

Agree completely. What it says about the general public's taste and the state of film distribution / exhibition in the UK is also as depressing as Hollywood's 'worse than ever' lack of imagination.:(
