That comparison doesn’t hold up. Kids playing in the park is somewhat different, to a load of blokes playing franchise cricket. The equivalent would be football setting up a 5 aside league with x3 10 minute half’s with light show, and goal music.

The hundred is dreadful for so many reasons. I’d rather cricket died, than progress like this. That or it retains a hardcore, even if it becomes a minority sport.

Name me many classic 20/20 games? Not many stick in the mind, because they’re so disposable. Great test matches and series’ you remember for life.

I like you prefer the longer game but hopefully the kids watching this will start to play cricket in the 20 over form then join a adult team to play either 40 over or timed games. That’s when they will start to appreciate how to build an innings and throwing the bat will see them getting out quickly.

From there they will see the long form of cricket as what it is, simply the king of sports, 5 days to include thinking about pitch, weather, bowlers both spin and pace, have you a batsman who can pad out if needed ? Or score quickly if needed ?

From acorns and all that.

( doesn’t mean I’ll watch it mind)

And the dinosaurs sat and watched as cricket died.

OK, that a bit OTT, but short form cricket is a way of getting kids into the sport. My 3 love it. Do you want to stop footy in the park, with jumpers for goalposts as well? That doesn't exactly replicate the rules of the traditional game either.

For years colts have been playing 20 over games.. Not easy to get all in game in short time so have to restrict overs and batters retire at 25/30. During summer holiday they play in Junior cricket festival. Proper games with declarations. Batters can bat through and to get max points have to bowl opposition out. They all much prefer this longer form as have more opportunity to make a contribution

Im not going to get into whether the Hundred is good or not (again) - but Test cricket has to be THE most boring format in sport out there. Fine for a few decades ago when "life" wasn't so hectic, but as society has sped up, so has sport. You find it everywhere in sport these days...rules, uniform changes, music etc....its all been tweaked to fit into a more modern lifestyle, to keep the games interesting and fun (mostly for the next generation).
None of that (imo) can be put in the same sentence as Test cricket. A game spread over days, thats incredibly slow, with nothing else to see or do - except watch a bunch of guys just standing still for 90% of the time, while you read a book or newspaper. Dull as dishwater. At least with short format cricket you get to sit and watch a bunch of guys just standing still for 90% of the time...but its all over in 3 hours.

And I say that as a parent of a child who loves playing the game at a decent level....but then I also find 50 over cricket incredibly dull and slow as well. Its no wonder people fall asleep watching it...including me on a Saturday afternoon.

Nice sentiments. More likely the instant gratification of 4s and 6s will result in the concentration span of a gnat in a similar way to how Monday night 15 minute each way 5 a side leagues have replaced Saturday and Sunday football resulting in less kids, youths and adults playing proper football, with many kids never playing a full 90 minute match.

Boundaries are a dangerous place for a nap - seen many a person rudely awakened from their slumber by balls either sailing over the boards or bouncing over after hitting the rope. Seem to recall an elderly gentleman getting hospitalised at Eastbourne a few years ago this way.

I’m happy to watch all forms, real or disposable p, and don’t really feel the need to compare the various versions. They’re each like sports in their own right.

I can hope…mind you when I stopped playing the kids were more interested in strike rates than long partnerships so sadly you might be correct.

My 90 ball 9 was not appreciated by some , although I went in at 37 for 7 and was last man out at 107 all out, just staying there in lower league cricket picks up many a by, no ball and wides as some old boy leaves on length to the annoyance of some 17 year old wannabe Anderson.

Now that is my type of batting. Possibly a bit quick scoring though.

Lets bore the opposition to defeat.

Yes, it sounds a bit rapid for me. I once faced 54 balls without scoring - that was during a 100+ partnership in which I scored 14. I also once batted for more than hour for 0 before getting a dodgy lbw. The umpire later said he gave me out because he was bored with me batting.

That's my type of cricket

Don't know whar happened last night but it's pretty much the equivalent of a Gender Reveal .. either way the celebrations are both the same and both equally meaningless.

Not one of these pretentious cricket snobs then?

Kids love it.

Kids love purple dinosaurs, the word "bum", eating their own shit, S Club 7, Little Mix, sweets entirely made of E numbers, picking their noses, fighting imaginary dragons, clothes their parents have chosen, McDonalds, Gully, throwing up and running into the road.
