If it's greatest ever thaen it has to be between:

Fangio
Senna
Schumacher.

But than its different cars and different eras.

Totally agree
That race in todays cars would be sensational just a shame Senna lost his life so early...

a thread of the greatest racing drivers full stop would be good, Surtees won in F1 & Motorbikes if I'm correct, Mansell won the F1 & Indycar Championship and almost won the famous Indy500. Montoya is doing alright in NASCAR aswell as his F1 success.

Well Hamilton is shit and Raikkonen is terrible.

Hamilton is currently driving his socks off in a terrible car. It certainly doesn't make him shit.

before last season i said Massa would win, and this season Vettel.

Well last season you were wrong. Lets hope you are wrong again.

Vettel is clearly a very talented driver, but I'm hoping that Button can continue his fine form this season.

No doubt that he was the greatest, thread is now closed.

Some great names there, but here's another 1 for you...Graham Hill. He's the only driver to win the Formula 1 championship, Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 hour.

Senna VS Schumacher would of been brilliant....

Leaving aside that it's "Senna vs Schumacher would have been brilliant" (why do so many posters continue to get that one wrong?), they did, indeed, often race each other. Schumacher's first F1 race was in 1991; Senna's last was in 1994. Schumacher's first grand prix (from which he retired in the first lap) was won by Senna (the 1991 Belgian Grand PRix). In Schumacher's first win (the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix), Senna came 5th. And, of course, Schumacher won the race (the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix) in which Senna died. Despite having featured in loads of races together, on only four occasions were both on the podium - and on each of those, Senna finished ahead of Schumacher.

Hopeless trying to assess drivers from different eras driving vastly different technology machinery but I suspect Jim Clark wouldn't have been far from the top - saw him race in 1967 at Oulton Park in a non championship F1 race (they used to have them in those days) when he utterly trounced the rest of the field.

He amassed 25 GP wins in 72 starts, won two World Championships in 1963 and 1965, would have won more but for the unreliability of the Lotus cars he drove and won the Indianapolis 500 as well. A dreadful loss to the sport when he was tragically killed in an insignificant Formula 2 race in 1968....

Jim Clark would also be in with a shout, yes, And Ascari (but which one - father or son?). No one's mentioned Lauda yet, which is surprising.

Hamiltion and Raikkonen are the 'bigmoney players' and they are terrible. Not taking anything away from Button but I hope Vettel wins this year.

What would button do in this years maclaren? nowhere near as good as Hamiltion

I think Niki Lauda was lucky enough to have access to the first decent Ferrari F1 car in many years, not saying he wasn't a good driver but of that era Stewart, Fittipaldi, Ickx and Peterson were at least as talented.....

Which brings up why has no-one mentioned Jackie Stewart? 27 GP wins from 99 starts, 3 world championships between 1969 and 1973 - are NSC Formula 1 fans too young to have seen him race perhaps?

Montoya?
I happen to think that the drivers from the era before gravel traps, downforce and safety in general were different gravy.
3 drivers died during the '58 season and 10 drivers died in the the 10 years between '67 and '77. To drive a car on the ragged edge knowing that a mistake will possibly cost your life sets those drivers apart from todays overpaid corporate muppets. How many of todays drivers go a race let alone a season without making an unforced error.
Step forward Sir Stirling Moss
