Decent gastro pub affair, went for tempura cod cheeks & the burger with pecorino, truffled mushrooms on a charcoal mayo. Coupled with AMEX shop small was a right bargain

My daughter's friend went to Six on Western Road. She thought they were on the scheme but when the bill came it was full price so she assumed she'd been mistaken and naively didn't say anything at the time. She later found out they are actually on the scheme so she rang them up. She was told she had to ask for the discount at the time.

This doesn't sound right. They will probably still claim the money back off the government so they will get an extra 50% income for that particular meal, or possibly even more because the fully charged price could be put through as if it was a discounted price. The system is really open to abuse especially with foreign visitors who won't be so aware of the scheme. There could also be quite a few ghost meals being sold.


It was a pretty stupid move to try and rip customers off though and then not offer to resolve the "mistake" when it was pointed out to them.

Having just read a story on the Argus website about a young Kayaker who lost his life this week it might be that the staff ar the Six restaurant may have other things on their minds. The man who died ran this restaurant and other businesses in Brighton and Hove with his brother.

Definitely some gaming going on. A coffee shop I usually go to after haircut is signed up - yet they're not allowing sit ins at the moment take away only. Got my usual coffee at full price but wonder why they would be signed up with no sit ins possible

My in-laws own a restaurant, they're signed up and it's working well for them. As a family business they can make up on some of the income they lost from being closed as they're now fully booked at the start of the week.

They said it was very easy to sign up for and they have to calculate the discount manually on the bill as their till system can't do it. They keep all the receipts and record the discount on each one then add it up and claim that amount back on the website.

They're being very careful and keeping records of everything (pretty standard practice I guess) but can see how it'll be open to abuse as nothing is really checked. Only way of getting caught is being audited. If businesses are taking the piss and not applying the discount people should report it.

Last time I went to Six, and it really will be the last time, I got every dish removed from the bill as they were all so awful. I'd never seen a Creme Brulee look like runny puke until then.

This. Plenty of craft beers to be had in the fridge, only half the price they'd be in a hipster bar. And sometimes nothing hits the spot like a reasonably priced fry-up rustled up pronto tonto and served with a smile and a basket of sauces. People who hate Spoons are really sneering at the folks who eat and drink there. And that's not nice

To a point you are correct. However, on occasions I would not eat in there, and would happily pay a little more as I don't want to share my dining experience with the drunks who have been parked in there from opening time. They offer decent food and drink at not bad value. However, such value can sometimes come at a cost. That's not being snobby at all.

Returned to normality [emoji23][emoji23] My income is consistently month on month 50% less than pre Covid! It schemes like these that make an occasional night out ‘palatable’
