They disembarked in 45
And no-one spoke and no-one smiled
There were to many spaces in the line.
Gathered at the cenotaph
All agreed with the hand on heart
To sheath the sacrificial Knifes.
But now
She stands upon Southampton dock
With her handkerchief
And her summer frock clings
To her wet body in the rain.
In quiet desperation knuckles
White upon the slippery reins
She bravely waves the boys Goodbye again.

And still the dark stain spreads between
His shoulder blades.
A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves.
And when the fight was over
We spent what they had made.
But in the bottom of our hearts
We felt the final cut.

One of my favourites:

Big man, pig man, ha ha charade you are.
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha charade you are.
And when your hand is on your heart,
You're nearly a good laugh,
Almost a joker,
With your head down in the pig bin,
Saying "Keep on digging."
Pig stain on your fat chin.
What do you hope to find.
When you're down in the pig mine.
You're nearly a laugh,
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

Bus stop rat bag, ha ha charade you are.
You f***ed up old hag, ha ha charade you are.
You radiate cold shafts of broken glass.
You're nearly a good laugh,
Almost worth a quick grin.
You like the feel of steel,
You're hot stuff with a hatpin,
And good fun with a hand gun.
You're nearly a laugh,
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

Hey you, Whitehouse,
Ha ha charade you are.
You house proud town mouse,
Ha ha charade you are
You're trying to keep our feelings off the street.
You're nearly a real treat,
All tight lips and cold feet
And do you feel abused?
.....! .....! .....! .....!
You gotta stem the evil tide,
And keep it all on the inside.
Mary you're nearly a treat,
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry.

This was performed by Aussie Floyd recently at the Brighton centre with even more venom than the original. The second verse was a subtle attack on Thatcher. :clap2:

aussie floyd was a fantastic evening with a great light show viewed from the south balcony.i enjoyed it more than roger at wembley 2 years ago.the aussie drummer is much better than nick mason and the base line tighter than the real floyds bassist.

but rog could write an album.gilmour although a greater musician cant write for toffee.learning to fly being his best solo effort

Totally agree, took my son & daughter who thought it was excellant although my daughter usually prefers Green Day & what is I guess passes for punk these days.

Anyway any drummer is better than Nick Mason!

He was the only song writer to my knowledge to attack Thatcher in lyrics, being very anti the Falklands War (making a whole album out of it).

Erm... Billy Bragg? Paul Weller? Robert Wyatt? Terry Hall? Paul Heaton? Joe Strummer? etc etc etc.

Yes but the others did not directly name check her in lyrics but were rather general anti Tory lyrics (you may beable to quote something & prove me wrong).

Robert Wyatt with Shipbuilding which was written by Elvis Costello was the only other music around at the time which actually dealt with the Falklands War.

As far as Weller was concern, what a tosser. I remember (one of his) first interviews in the NME when he actually praised Thatcher & was Tory through & through. Only when he came to his senses or it suited him did he convert.

As for Joe Strummer, Strummer, was one of the best & very politcical. Didn't he go to public school though? RIP

In rehab
Arnold Layne had a strange hobby
Collecting clothes
Moonshine washing line
They suit him fine

On the wall hung a tall mirror
Distorted view, see through baby blue
He dug it
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?

Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Now he's caught - a nasty sort of person.
They gave him time
Doors bang - chain gang - he hates it

Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?

Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne
Don't do it again.

arnold layne is a good song but not a lot to do with rog's lyrics.

its a sid tune

"Oi...Get your filthy hands off my desert!"
"What 'e say?"

Brezhnev took Afghanistan.
Begin took Beirut.
Galtieri took the Union Jack.
And Maggie, over lunch one day,
Took a cruiser with all hands.
Apparently, to make him give it back.

McCartney was recording Band on the Run at the same time as DSOTM at Abbey Road. According to the biog's the McCartneys answers to the questions were too bland so not used. One of the guys in Wing's voice was used as was the doorman... I don't know if I was really drunk at the time...:drink:

57. During the recording of "The Dark Side Of The Moon", the guys from Pink Floyd wrote on little papers questions like "Are you afraid of death?" and gave them to everyboy that was working at Abbey Road studio at the time. This included all the roadies, sound technicians, the Irish doorman, and even Paul McCartney (who was recording "Abbey Road" with the Fab Four on the same studio). The answers to the questions were recorded, and the best ones were put on the disc. However, Paul's answers weren't put on the disc because "he tried to be funny".

from 101 thinks you didnt know about rock and roll

also see the great book "saucerfull of secrets"and masons inside out covers it too
