Am off tomorrow on the coach with quite a few other Albion lads. Anyone else going or got any good tips for the meet?

As an old jockey friend of mine told me if you get a tip for The Derby ignore it as every horse is trying to win because it is worth so much to owner and jockey etc. The best they could do is say who has or hasnt a chance of winning.

In a wide open Derby, I tend to back the jockey, not the horse. So... Johnny Murtagh has chosen to ride Rip Van Winkle out of the half a dozen O'Brien runners, so that's good enough for me

And Masterofhehorse must be due a massive run sometime surely, so that looks a decent each way bet.

Rip van Winkle is already being Layed.

Gan Amris or whatever is the Pricewise choice, ie will be to short a price to give value.

Golden Sword looks the value bet E/W currently 50/1.

2 that will offer value each way are Black bear island and Age of Aquarious and are unkown quantities.

The Guineas winner rarely goes on to win the Derby ditto Guineas flops, so thats sea of star and Crowded house although the later does have the highest 2yr old ratings.

Suggested lucky 31 e/w

epsom

1.25 Dubai Crest
3.00 Old joe said
3.45 Golden Sword
4.30 Conquisto (Nap)
5.05 International Debut

So are you saying ive spunked me tenner up a wall ?

No, but it's very rare for a horse to win the Derby after such a poor run in its trial. The form of the Racing Post Trophy hasn't really worked out either.

There's a hint of rain in the air at Epsom, but nothing that will affect the going, which is just on the fast side of good.

I'll post a brief report on how they look in the paddock if anyone is interested. Midday was the pick before the Oaks yesterday, and she would have got there in a few more strides.

Ok i wont screw my ticket up just yet.some years back i backed a horse in the derby unkown to me that was only running as a pacemaker for a much better horse,it was called blue something or other and came 2nd or 3rd at 500-1 swelling the coffers, how is it possible that a out and out no hoper could show up so well in what is supposed to be the prestige race of the flat season?

The Derby used to be the ultimate prize, these days it's more of a starting point for the rest of the season. Many of the runners have never run over a mile and a half before, and can show remarkable improvement when they do. Also, the form horses that don't stay - ie Guineas winners etc - make the market, so it's not that surprising really.

If there's one to sneak into the frame at a huge price this year, I have a feeling it might be Debussy, who has form on the track and was way out of his ground at Chester last time just ike Masterofthehorse.
