'Dog Bombs' - the Latest Threat to British Troops
By Nick Allen, PA News in Basra
British soldiers in Iraq are being warned not to go near dead dogs because terrorists are using them to hide bombs.
A dog’s body was used recently as cover for a radio controlled device which was detonated by a roadside in the southern city of Basra.
British troops were the target but no-one was injured.
Now, military experts fear terrorists and supporters of Saddam Hussein could use the tactic again, putting explosives inside the carcasses of goats and sheep as well as dogs.
Ammunition Technical Officer Adrian Craddock of the Royal Logistics Corps (RLC), who investigated the dog bomb, said: “It was radio controlled and went off near a road. My assessment is that the dog was put on top of it so the device was covered.”
ATO Craddock, 36, from Didcot, Oxfordshire said: “It’s not a common tactic but we have to be aware of it.”
