I have two things to add to this.

1. It seems that Tony Blair is not only an expert on Weapons of Mass destruction he is now able to advise the government on how to deal with the Pandemic.

2 It takes the tragic shooting of 16 people in Canada for Sky news to stop asking why there isn't enough PEP to go round and getting Doctors on TV to blame the Government.(Although normal service was resumed in minutes)

I thought we were keeping politics off this thread?

I haven´t seen that new number, but it would be excellent news.

From BBC...

A further 429 people have died with coronavirus in hospitals in England, latest figures show.

NHS England said that 348 of these deaths were reported over the weekend, while the others took place at earlier dates.

The new figures take the total number of confirmed deaths in hospitals in England to 14,829.

In Wales, a further nine deaths have been announced, taking the total number of hospital deaths reported by Public Health Wales to 584.

Indeed great news. Need another couple of good days below 500 and then dropping again before weekend. maybe 200 a day next monday ?

Covid deaths strongly linked to air pollution levels. Not good in itself, but means there may be the will to take air pollution more seriously

Also would suggest why the fall in numbers, as air pollution is obviously going to have dropped considerably in the last few weeks, and a risk that reintroducing things could see another spike.

But agree, would be good if people start to take air pollution more seriously. It's often the forgotten crisis.

Just reading it in the Guardian. The tenor of it was that it's historic pollution that has damaged peoples lungs and left them weak against the virus. Short term reductions won't do much

We'll be in the pub by the end of May

Difficult to drink beer through a mask, although I'm sure some will improvise

If that seriously was the case, there simply won't be any pubs left to reopen

Pubs, clubs, restaurants and cinemas will be the last things to open, unfortunately. Boring isn’t it.

With no vaccine in sight, that could be a very long way off.

The government would then have to turn to supporting those sectors, far further than they might be already.

As per deanbon ‘s post in the Main Coronavirus Discussion Thread.

This is from El Pais the Spanish newspaper

There were 4,266 new cases on Monday, the lowest daily rise since March 17.

Speaking at the government’s daily press conference on Monday, Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts, said that the figures on the number of hospitalizations and intensive care admissions were “very promising.”

“Today is the first time we have fallen below 400 [daily fatalities], with a 2% increase compared to yesterday,” he added.

Simón also explained that Spain had significantly increased PCR testing, which is the most reliable detector of the coronavirus. “We have gone from 200,000 [tests] to 700,000 [in a week]. We are doing nearly four times as many PCR tests, but the infection rate is falling a lot, even more than what we thought.” In the first week of testing, 26.8% of those tested were found to be positive for Covid-19, compared to 3.1% last week, which indicates the outbreak is slowing, said Simón.

oldboyroy you may find this a little reassuring hopefully.

Whilst reducing air pollution is undoubtedly a worthy thing, Notters pointed out that it may be co-incidental as a cause of higher mortality, as the most polluted places tend to be the most densely populated.
