It seems nobody in Delhi is as the stadium is empty. Well, apart from the media who are lapping up the stories of how they need to filter out the bird shit from the swimming pool, and the numerous "Delhi-tummy" reports.

It's a pointless event these days isn't it? Or is it?

I was surprised that there hasn't been one thread yet! I have been watching(only because im at home and bored) and I think the coverage has been pretty decent although heavily focussed on Swimming more than anything! Quite enjoy watching the Squash,Badminton and Cycling but have been watching all sorts(archery,hockey,netball,table tennis). Just a shame so many of the worlds best arent present and some of the conditions are poor.

When its held somewhere NICE and COMFORTABLE, then more of the better athletes will fancy it, and the level of competition is worthwhile.

Here they didn't, so it isn't.

Cycling and Athletics are slightly different - both sports had major [European / World] championships this summer, and the good athletes planned their seasons to peak for those. You can't just peak again 6 weeks later - it doesn't work like that.

On the whole, it is a shambles though. I could have been there for work, but thankfully knocked it back. My colleagues out there are not having a good time.

I'm also off work today and enjoying the coverage, some pretty good finals so far in the swimming, loads of medals for England...what could be better?

its much more interesting than it being in f***ing glasgow.

i think its excellent. i also like the way the bbc have different options to click for the medals table taking into account population and gdp. they are relentless in their mission to patronise poor little countries especially ones with lots of brown people in them.

unfortunately due to the IOMs one success in some event it has skewed their plan completely now you have a tax haven full of wealthy white people at the top of the tree. unlucky groovy bbc people!

Fair point...feed them on a diet of deep fried mars bars, fish suppers and Irn-Bru for two weeks and they won't be capable of anything!

Mind you, the games are supposed to leave a legacy for the host city...perhaps in the case of Glasgow instead of sports arenas they could leave some soap!

It depends on your definition of interesting. Personally I'd prefer watching the best athletes as opposed to seeing how they cope with the squits, bird shit in the pool or buildings crumbling before the thing starts.

And how do you view the medals table in different ways? Can't find the link from the medals table to do this. That does sound classic BBC though.

I am here for work. Ticket sales have been very poor. They vary in price. I watched NZ beat South Africa 4-2 at Mens Hockey the other night and the ticket cost about one pound twenty. It varies depending on what event you want to watch. Also watched the boxing the other night, cost about a fiver. Total attendance for both events could only have been a few hundred.

Getting hold of tickets is not easy, not many outlets etc. Virtually no merchandise on sale anywhere, none at the stadiums, very limited food and drink at the stadiums.

Seems the Indians are only really turning out for events their team is competing in.

The Rugby 7's and the closing ceremony are the only events which I know are a sell out.

Still, I'm sure when it comes to Sports Personality this year you'll see the BBC pushing the claims of some idiot who won a bronze in the archery in Delhi because they still had the dirt-cheap rights to this desperate sixth-rate event. Graeme McDowell and Monty? Well yes, they did okay - but that was ONLY on Sky.

my definition of interesting is indeed bird shit in pools or collapsing buildings at a major sporting event rather than someone chucking a discus a bit further than someone else with no other incident of note occuring to accompany it.

But there you highlight the problem of sports awareness. People will only vote for someone or something they know about, if a sport (such as cricket or Premiership rugby) is covered almost exclusively by Sky then the mass appeal will decline and make it less likely that someone from those sports will win SPOTY.

I've found it amusing to see some of these English swimmers portrayed as heroes for battling past illness to win gold. To me, it just shows how shit the event really is. If you can win gold operating at about 30 per cent, the whole thing is a joke. Being at 95 per cent would see you lose at the Olympics.
