League reveals new deal

The Football League has announced a new three-year sponsorship deal with Coca-Cola from the 2004/05 season.

The contract will cover Divisions One, Two and Three and brings an end to the League's partnership with current sponsors Nationwide.

"This new agreement is good news and provides a tremendous boost for League clubs," said Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney.

"It'll contribute significantly to the proposed re-branding of the League."

FOOTBALL LEAGUE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Football League has agreed the largest title sponsorship agreement in its history with Coca-Cola Great Britain. The new partnership, at the heart of the country’s best loved sport , will run for three seasons from the beginning of the 2004/05 campaign and represents Coca-Cola’s biggest ever commitment to domestic football, helping to bring excitement and enjoyment to the game via the League’s 72 clubs.

Playing a major role within the new partnership are a number of Coca-Cola Great Britain’s growing range of soft drink brands. Coca-Cola will be the title sponsor of The Football League competition; Coca-Cola and diet Coke will become The Official Soft Drinks of The Football League, Dasani becomes The Official Water of The Football League and Powerade will become The Official Sports Drink of The Football League.

In announcing the new partnership Football League Chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney said: “This new agreement is good news, it provides a tremendous boost for League clubs and, on their behalf, it is a great pleasure to welcome Coca-Cola to this partnership. I am grateful for their support. For our part we will ensure that we continue to deliver a quality product.

“Attracting a brand of the stature of Coca-Cola is clearly a coup for The League and demonstrates the enduring appeal of our competition. This partnership will contribute significantly to the proposed re-branding of The Football League.

He continued, “Attendances at League games are at their highest levels for 40 years and our clubs play an integral part in their local communities. We look forward to building upon that in the coming years.”

Charlotte Oades, President, Coca-Cola Great Britain said: “This partnership confirms our long-term commitment to football - Coca-Cola Great Britain has been investing in the game for over 30 years in this country at all levels from grassroots to international tournaments. We are very excited to be associated with The Football League at the heart of English and Welsh domestic football.”

“We are particularly pleased to bring some of our key brands – Coca-Cola, diet Coke, Powerade and Dasani Water – to enhance enjoyment and access to fans and players in their local communities.”

It's a disappointment I have to say, as "oh when the Saints go Coca Cola" doesn't really scan, whereas our rendition last season of "Oh when the Saints go Nationwide" was marvellous.
