The Budget?

The other, slightly less self-indulgent thing about the budget is you actually don't find out anything of real value on the day. All they do is flag up the bollocks like tax cuts and the like on the day. The real detail which wil have an effect on our lives is buried in the briefing papers and background. Things like advance corporation tax changes, pension regulation changes and the like generally take several days to be worked out.

Yeah but it's about enginie size innit? Mine is a 2.5L so not a HUGE guzzler *shehopes*!

Whats your car and how old? You should be able to find your c02 emissions if you look it up on your manufacturers website (or your last mot)

Lifted from the BBC website:

"The rise in VED for Band G cars - which include not only 4x4s but also some large people carriers and estate cars - was accompanied by a £10 rise for Band F vehicles, the next most polluting cars.

But while the least polluting Band A cars will continue to pay no VED, the next cleanest in Band B will see their rate cut by £15 to £35."

When I had my last job with company car we were taxed on the emmissions. My last car was a Honda CRV with emmisions less than 200 & although a 4 x 4 of sorts was pretty good on economy with 45 mpg on diesel. Most emmissions are published by the AA & in What Car type mags. So it is not on engine size but obviously a larger size will produce more emmissions. (Where have I heard that one before?)

It's 2004 BMW X3, so not had an MOT yet. It all sounds very technical that does!

It won't be great - but I'm trying to get on the VCA car fuel data web site - but its not happening - I'm guessing everyone is on there trying to check as well!! It'll be on your V5 also

Oh and its not very technical to be honest...

Basically your car emits carbon (amongst other things) as a result of the combustion process (spark ignites fuel which pushes a piston which turns a cranksahft which turns your wheels) which drives your engine. More fuel usage creates more emissions, so cars which are "gas guzzlers" will emit more. Basically bigger, heavier and higher performance cars swallow more petrol and will be taxed more.

I didn't hear it but would guess Gordon said "billions" a lot and then summarised his final budget as something like "prudence with a purpose delivering the people's priorities..."

Not sure about abolishing the 10p tax band... how does that benefit the low paid? (assuming that as a Labour policy it does somehow...)

Worried about this gas-guzzlers tax. Will my 1979 Ford Transit campervan be classed as a gas guzzler? ???

We only drive it a few times a year on holidays and weekends away, yet we could be penalised massively by paying huge amounts of tax.

:(

I'm a single male homeowner with mortgage and no kids. Basic rate tax band, drinks too much and smokes occasionally.

I get f'all. I never get anything, anywhere. No cheap f***ing rail deals, no tax credits, no cheap entry to the local leisure amenities. All I do is pay my taxes and listen to middle class wankers whinging about how unfair it is that they have to pay theri share as well.

Not exactly in same situation but I agree. We do our best, not looking for handouts but a f***ing break once in a while. Even if that break was decent rail service, decent leisure facilities, reasonable tax so that I could at least bear to pay for them.

This is a very strange move indeed, I really can't see the benefit. I can only assume this preceeds a significant rise in the minimum wage.

(Very) Rough calculations mean that a person earning £15k will be about £40 better off. That is an extra 76p a week! Assuming that is not consumed by NICs.

According to the BBC budget calculator, I'll be £257 a year better off.

Not sure I'm happy about that, I'd rather pay £250 more tax and have cheaper and better public transport and schools that are so good that there's no need to go halfway across the city to find one... well, I can dream can't I?

:(. It was £200 to tax last year so I'm expecting a big hike. Might get rid this year anyway and buy something much smaller, anyone wanna buy a motor?!!!

Why not phone up Robin Hood and ask him for some wealth distribution?

Pretty much what I meant nibble. Just once I'd like someone to say - 'all those of you who just work away and pay taxes, don't use schools, don't claim benefits, don't produce shit loads of landfill - heres something to say thanks'.

I will be slightly worse off. As I probably will be each year for eternity.
Slightly better off one year, slightly worse off the next. I predict this pattern will continue with no major upset until I retire when I will be poor. Until then I will continue to traipse back and forth to work through litter strewn streets, passing unruly anti social knobbers, encountering rude and underpaid shopstaff and customer service agents until I am found slumped in front of the gas fire with weeks of post piling up behind the door and the Christmas decorations still up , leaving my disillusioned children with nothing more than the vast debts that I couldn't have possibly hoped to pay off before my sad, miserable, lonely death.

that's about right then... a very small step in the right direction... (presumably the person on £15K is more positively affected by Labour improvements in benefits, tax credits, child care schemes, etc)
