Without wanting to derail the thread, you could argue that they were not true Communist states, rather Stalinist which was a form of Fasciscm anyway. Look to Cuba for the nearest realisation of the Marxist ideal or maybe Chavez's Venuzula (although it's early days). Highly popular genuinely egalitarian systems of self government.

A Strasserite would argue that National Socialist Germany was not a National Socialist State when Hitler sold out to the Industrialist and military.

I spent about 5 weeks in Cuba and everything seemed to be quite happy on the surface. But then plenty of Cubans have tried to/have/will escape to the US. Odd country. Best healthcare system in the world, I think. Plenty of Americans fly in via Canada for treatment.

I used to have an Estonian girlfriend who grew up in pre 1989 Soviet Union so know all about what they got up to thank you very much.

As I said I want neither Fascism and Communism as both have a vicious underside that brooks no dissident views.

Yes it was quite bizarre. The reds mimicking the Hitler youth. Then again you now have the Nazbols in Russia. Which is a mixture of communism and national Socialism
