Children were used as “objects for research” while the risks of contracting hepatitis and HIV were ignored at a specialist school where boys were treated for haemophilia, the final report of the infected blood inquiry has found.

Same as the Post Office scandal. Those who knew either turned a blind eye or actively got involved, those who have followed them have been more interested in the reputation of the institution than the truth and the fourth estate simply weren’t all that bothered as they had other, “sexier” stories to talk about. Oh, and a few people got absolutely filthy rich off the back of it. And the victims were little people who could be easily ignored.

As a lefty accolyte of the NHS....the managers at the NHS are culpable here.
Any tory with his head screwed on could make mileage with this. Not saying it would be right or fair, but it would fair game in the political milieu. If I were a tory I'd be tempted.
Not sure Blair had much of a finger on the pulse of this when he got in, but happy to be corrected.
I recall Private Eye reporting on the folly of buying cheap blood from the US, culled from prisoners. But it was cheap. Who knew the risks? Everyone!
I’ve said it before, if Private Eye was the most read publication in the country we’d be in a much better state than we are now.
Other than Andrew Wakefield, their record on this sort of thing is outstanding.
The chances diminish.
But we must, as plebs, hold the system to account.
A bit of the Samrah spirit of inquiry should permeate us all. But it is all to easy to not ask awkward questions, cause offence, etc.
Risk and reward. And a willingness to accept getting it wrong. Always ask awkward questions.

As someone who has trouble with their blood clotting and can go through weeks of extreme tiredness, I have found the last couple of days of reporting on this very intriguing but ultimately extremely upsetting.
No amount of money is going to bring back the 3,000 or so lives lost and maybe the many more that have to rely on round-the-clock care and health problems developed from contaminated blood transfusions. What do the NHS and Government think that the families affected by all this are going to do with their new found wealth? Fly to Australia and sunbathe on the golden beaches for the rest of their lives? FÙCK OFF!! Money might be a soother but it's deeply crass at the very least.
I hope that, like the Hillsborough victims, they are never forgotten and the names (although pretty much nigh-on impossible) are released and we learn about what they might possibly have achieved in life.
Rest in peace and thoughts to all those still affected. You will never be forgotten. ❤
