The Evening Star used to be an unpretentious little pub that was well OK.
Now it is run by Dark Star (one of the Managers is from Bromley, CP reject) and now it is to be avoided at all costs. It is brain damage. WARNING!

Whilst liking the pubs around the station – Lord Nelson, Evening Star and Battle of Trafalgar I always prefer making the trek over to Hanover which is pub Nirvana IMHO. So much choice – Constant Service, Dover Castle, The Greys, The Hanover, Charles Napier and Walmer Castle and not a beardy weirdy insight (well most of the time!). It’s probably true that none of them will ever make best pub in the UK but they are just that bit less crowded and that bit more chilled than the central Brighton outlets and a great way to while away a sunny Saturday afternoon.

No Stand Up Inn, Lindfield? It's got everything needed to be a good pub. Real ale at good prices and a cosy atmosphere with no rowdy, pissed up youngsters.

Is that the Linden Tree? Always was a good pub when I was a pissed up youngster!!

There are some good pubs there for sure. I used to go into them loads, The Charles Napier was my favourite for a good while. If you could get a seat outside in summer there are few pub gardens in Brighton to rival a summers afternoon spent in that little sun trap.
A lot of them have changed hands since I frequented them and a lot of my mates have moved away from that area so I don't go around there much these days but an occasional summers day stumble between some of those pubs is one of my rare but enjoyable treats!

Good to see, in particular, The Square and Compasses at Worth Matravers, Dorset (31st), still meriting a visit. A pub I would happily die in.

I rather enjoyed visiting the Nobody Inn, during a brief stint in the West Country. An astonishing array of beers and an astonishing amount of ghosts if rumours are to be believed.

They were generally quite busy, but presumably didn't take many telephone bookings.

Don't like the evening star much, been there in the evening and tried it as a pre-match venue. A lot of fat blokes who didn't seem to like having a shower or wearing fresh clothes put me off it, the beer was good but not good enough to keep me there.

Maybe I was unlucky on the days/evenings I have been there but smelly overweight men showing their Dagenham cleavages just doesn't do it for me.

Much prefer The Lord Nelson / Battle of Trafalgar for pre match Baskets for post match drinking.

Have you rated it? I agree that it's oddly London skewed, but pretty much every pub in the UK is listed on beerintheevening and that Top 40 is an ever changing summary of the Top 40 average ratings (for every pub that has been rated by 25 or more people).

The Kelham Island can't be far off the list, with its 7.3 average rating (rated by 109 people, compared to the Evening Star's 287 people and 7.6 rating) - as ratings are presumably rounded up/down that might be very close to the 7.4s at the bottom of the Top 40:

I've no idea why so many London places are so highly rated in comparison to the rest of the country, but I agree that I'd expect places like the Kelham Island Tavern and Fat Cat Sheffield, Brunswick Derby, Swan & Rushes Leicester, Coach & Horses and Fat Cat Norwich to feature. They all have high ratings so can't be far off - in fact, the Swan & Rushes has 7.6 and 25 people rated it, so it will probably be a new entry up near the top soon.

Can't argue with your choice of pubs. Could it be that Northern folk experience more difficulty in using new fangled things like the interweb ?

I see that the Wheatsheaf in Crowborough sneaks in at no. 36. A Harveys pub where the beer's kept in pretty good nick - just a shame about the prices.

If you look at beerintheevening though there seems to have been some controversy over some reviews. People never reviewing before or since and happening to big up the pub etc. Surely not a fit up?!

Given that they praise the staff for their friendliness (?) I think almost certainly!
