Weird coincidence about that movie - New Order reunited to do a track for its soundtrack, and The Beach was the name of the B-Side of Blue Monday, New Orders best selling track.

Ok film, resembles Lord Of The Flies in parts and I'm no fan of the sprout faced boy (Dicaprio). Nice scenery though.

the books one of my top 10 faves

has anyone read the tesseract ,alex garlands other book?

I thought it was pretty poor. It just doesn't ratchet it up sufficiently. And DiCaprio was an appalling piece of casting. This was not a role which suited him, at all. Even when he was supposedly losing it, he just looked like a sad little boy.

And all that quoting from Apocalypse Now just became tiresome and trite after a while.

Agree with above, marvellous book, disapointing though watchable film. Had they cast an English actor as Richard and stuck to the plot it would have been a classic.

The place that inspired the Beach is in a national park, just off the island of Kho Phangan. It is possible to go there, I did in 2000, it was an amazingly beautiful place and the Thais are keen to keep it that way. There are very few places that you are allowed to stay, we spent a night under the stars sleeping in hammocks on an otherwise deserted island, not comfortable to sleep in but one of my favourite travel memories nonetheless.
