The Argus "make some noise" campaign

Whatever happened to that?

Now, as much as I think it's quite frankly PATHETIC to have the local newspaper trying to up the volume, something has to be done.

Surely something can be done to drown out the cries of "f*** off Murray/Robinson/etc etc"? You never know, it MIGHT help them play better. Hell, it's not going to make them any worse than that, and I can't imagine it does much for their confidence being told they are playing like a twat.

?

It is ridiculous how quiet Withdean is nowadays. We are blessed with some great songs, but they are rarely heard. Forster was saying (column in the Argus on Friday) that a bit of noise can make a huge difference to the players and spurs them on.

Whilst you could argue that it is the old chicken/egg situation, we were never '...only sing when you're winning' fans, were we?

Definitely not. In the early years at Withdean, the South Stand noise was ELECTRIC from the kick off. So the no roof excuse doesn't work for me.

It's a joke - surely there's some way of getting the noise back?

Let's face it, 'creative' moves to try and create a good atmosphere at Withdean are as pointless as rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. It is an utterly futile, hopeless excercise, the place will never be anything other than a soulless tip. Depressing as it is, we and the players just have to continue to muddle through until Falmer.

Agreed. There are various examples when you could see the team physically lifted by the Withdean roar and not in the too distant past. Withdean has now become a chore and I can't see it ever changing, unfortunately. I think we have settle on the mindset that we can't create an atmosphere and that is difficult to shake off.

It's a whole raft of things:- having to sit, numbered seating, no pay on the gate, no roof, ticket pricing affecting demographic, too far from pitch and too high (south) to provide intimidation to visitors, huge gaps between the various sections around the ground, away people too far away, players affected by consequent lack of atmosphere so games are uninspiring and crowd become more fed up.

In short home advantage is almost non-existent.

As if to underline this, over the course of a season our number of away points as a percentage of those gained at home is usually greater than that of any of the other 91 clubs.

Yeah you can buy from the ticket office by phone or in person up to 2pm or online up to kick off and collect at ground. If you really want to go to a game its not that hard to sort out close to the event.

The club should bring back the transparent dugouts.

When they were see-through (the first one or two seasons at Withdean), South Stand fans were able to start a barney with most opposition benches, which served to get everyone wound up, and put pressure on the referee. And I seem to remember we provoked a number of opposition managers into getting red-carded, Craig Brown among them.

Bring them back!

Wasn't the 'Make Some Noise' campaign a plea from McGhee which was backed by The Argus for a match?

It is sad that there is a need to plea fans to support the team but unfortunately The Withdean creates that kind of atmosphere. The reason the atmosphere was so good the first few seasons was because we had a winning team and naturally the fans started getting behind them as promotion/championship became a reality.

Maybe it's time that North Stand Chat became a force at the ground. I know it's not exactly a majority of fans on the forum but it's quite a big voice of fans. Perhaps an 'official' campaign to 'Make Some Noise' backed by the boards and all the members, and subsequently covered by The Argus etc. could be successful in bringing back some atmosphere. The problem with stuff like this is that it always sounds like pipe dreams, when really it takes a few people to actually take their fingers out their arses and get on with it, but I think it could work.
