The Argus :Horrific Brighton attack

Jan 14, 2008

"This is the horrific injury inflicted on a student by thugs wielding a broken bottle.

The two 22-year-olds were the victims of an unprovoked attacked by five men in Middle Street, Brighton.

The pair were left needing facial reconstruction surgery and stitches and police said the road was awash with blood.

Sussex Police had previously refused to release the picture, saying the image of the injury was too shocking.

But detectives have now changed their mind and hope when witnesses realise the ferocity of the attack they will come forward with information.

Officers said the injury to this student, named only as Jack, were some of the worst they had ever seen.

DS Stephen French, who is leading the investigation, said the attack would leave both men, who do not want to be identified, scarred for life.

Detectives are looking for five men who they believe were probably seen by door personnel.

It is thought they could have been turned away from clubs in the area before the assault.

Police are also appealing anyone who might have witnessed the attack at 2.30am on Sunday or who may have seen the men, particularly those who service the night-time economy, such as security staff or taxi drivers, to contact them.

Officers have also appealed for a man who gave first aid to the men to come forward.

They believe he may have useful information which could help their investigation.

The suspects are described as white, between 20 and 30. It is now believed that they were all wearing light tops or hooded tops and all were shaven headed. "

THat's absolutlely shocking .

I'm originally from Brighton and love the place, but I've been in the States for 9 years now, and everytime I come back I just don't feel that safe going into town when I'm over visiting friends and family.

I live near Detroit, which is no Holiday destination either, and I've have been in a few scrapes over the years. Having said that in 9 years I've only ever seen a handful of fights at Bars............and glass/bottle attacks just don't happen !!!

It seems to me as a 36yr old that all the drop outs who left school at 16,17,18, while I was there have gone on to spawn a generation of absolute C**ts

Has it always been this bad ?......Or am I just more aware of it as Im and old fart now ?

omg that his absolutely horrific the poor lad. i hate thugs and bullies i must say. in fact i know that a couple of the sqad were out in brighton a few months ago and a few lads pulled a knife on them in a taxi rank and they had to run of to get away from them. hope they reported the incident to the police as a lot of people dont and then these thugs just keep on doing these kind of things and getting away with it. its just awful that you cant go out for a night and enjoy yourself without worrying about the safety of you and your friends. what a bloody awful world this is becoming.

I’d agree completely with that. You just don’t get the aggression and the “what you looking at mate?” mentality in bars in the States. Like you say glassing someone is unheard of – and before someone starts about “No they don’t glass you they just shoot you” that generally doesn’t happen in bars either – outside in the streets in certain places, yes but that’s happening in London as well these days. There’s as big a racial mix in New York as there is in London or Brighton but folks do seem able to go out and enjoy a drink without the violence which is endemic in the UK now, part of that is down to the respect people seem to show one another, like it used to be in the UK.

f*** me, that is shocking. That's one of the reasons i won't let my 16 year old out on his own. Violence for no reason other than the fact these idiots like it.
A 18 year old kid i know got bottled for nothing getting off the DLR in London at 8 in the evening. He is a lovely looking kid, college, Uni, wants to be a lawyer, and now has a 7" scar down his cheek. CCTV still couldn't get the thugs into court. Hopefully what goes around....and all that.
This country has/is going to the dogs.

Indeed, I don't blame anyone who carries a weapon to protect themselves.

The problem here is weapons, when I were a lad it were fists and fists only - no knives etc

rarely go into Brighton at the weekend anymore the atmosphere is one of not if, but when its going to kick off,it seems the norm and a expected part of a night out in brighton now rather than the odd occurence.

Depends where you go. I lived in central Brighton (off Western Road) for 1.5 years and rarely saw trouble, despite being out fridays and saturdays.

Stay away from places that sell 3 WKDs for a fiver or demand that you do not wear trainers or let women in for free then you shall be trouble free for the evening.

Don't worry though. If they are caught they will be serverly punished with a huge fine(that they can pay off over the next hundred years) or if the judge wants to set an example, they my even have to spend a week or two in prison.

Very true unfortunately. I'd have these violent little shits put into prison for a long time and have to share a cell with someone like Charles Bronson (not the actor) and see where their hard man routine gets them. Or put in with a 20 stone queer that hasn't had sex for a year.

This is a horrific and violent attack, and the bastards that did it should be taken off the streets until they are old men...

...however, I don't think it's fair to say it's the norm.

I've lived in Brighton most of my life and can't remember a time when there wasn't stories in the argus saying how brighton was more violent than ever, etc etc etc.

Up until a couple of months ago I had lived right in the town centre for 10 years, I've been out on the piss in Brighton since I was 14, in all that time I've been attacked once (and that was a numpty on a bus in Hove that didn't really go anywhere). Yes, I've seen fights over the years, and some pretty nasty ones at that, but not many considering the amount of time involved.
