The Argus - Albion Friendly?

With the latest sensational story on the front page of the Argus it makes you wonder whether they really give a toss about the Albion or not. It strikes me that most of the info is re-cycled from stuff we already knew and yet they are making this out to be some kind of exclusive seemingly just to stir up trouble.

The article would have been far more balanced, and accurate if they had a club quote as well, but yet they ask Norman Baker

Not exactly helpful though is it to have such an unbalanced and unconfirmed report, which is largely filled out with info we already knew from the presentation at Hove Town Hall months ago.

Rubbish. The argus has been MASSIVELY supportive of the club over the last THIRTY years and more. Right now, I'd say that for a large percentage of the local population, their ONLY exposure to the club is through the argus.

There have been moments over the years where personal issues between the lead reporter and the manager at the time [not just Naylor - Wilkins, but Vinnicombe at times too] have led to a bit of sniping, but CORPORATELY the Argus has never been anything other than PRO the Albion.

Whatever happens behind the scenes is hardly relevant though. The simple facts of the matter, are that even ignoring Falmer stuff, the paper gives over about 5 back pages per week, plus an approximate 7 or 8 further pages, to coverage of the Albion.

Without that exposure no-one would even know we still existed.

Ask anyone who works for the Argus and they all know that its the Albion which sells their papers. I fail to see how this story is 'sensationalist' either.

yeah ok good point, but there in it to sell papers to make money, bad news sells more papers, the new owners that bought southern publishing company (think that was the name) were amercian, if they had got there way those 5 pages a week wouldn't of been there. when my dad left there were some very big chips on peoples shoulders towards the albion and i'm not sure they have gone away.

Fair point, but they only spoke to them last night, and basically were reassured that everything was okay. The only change is that the budget has risen from £50million to £60million. Everything else was I believe known? All this kind of sesationalist story does is excite those who don't want to see it built. As the ridiculous comment from Norman Baker confirms.

There's nothing in the rules that state it should or shouldn't support the Albion. It's role is to reflect local issues (some more ridiculously local than others, but that's regional journalism for you), whether in favour or not.

Whether I agree with today's story (or any other Argus Albion-related issue) or not, I don't necessarily expect the paper to come out on the side of the club with everything they print. Their motivation is to sell papers, whether that involves being pro or anti.

Frankly I'm not convinced today's effort is even anti, as such, it's just a big shouty headline to generate a bit of interest on a slow news day.

Exactly. The Argus are supposed to try and report the news fairly and accurately, without being biased FOR or AGAINST the Albion.

The Argus has deteriorated as a local newspaper since they changed from an evening distribution.

What pissing me off is the angle they have tried to put her is that the stadium project is in trouble. Nothing could be further from the truth. The cost has gone up by £10million however everything else they have quoted has been known about since Febraury when the club held the presentation at Hove Town Hall.

In short its pretty much a non story, as I am sure a club statement will confirm soon.
