The Aldi Experience

Stepped into an Aldi for the first time ever today (London Road) and all I can say is, what a pile of gash, how does that shop make money? You've got masses of floor space really badly used, and cluttered with things like bike saddle bags and torches. What food they do have is overpriced and very few brands you would recognise. It was lunchtime and they had one! till open, no basket tills. I always assumed Aldi was a slightly upmarket Lidl, but it's not really. All in all a very strange experience, and one not to be repeated.

Yup, very odd experience. Only one till open at all times. No shopping baskets in the entire store. Never heard of any single brand of goods they got in there. It's all a bit random. Sort of the foodstuff equivalent of TK-MAXX. Almost enough to drive a London Road foodshopper into the arms of Somerfields, seeing as how the Co-op has gone up in price and down in stock and the Iceland is full of chav families kicking footballs around and slapping each other. Almost. But not quite.

I got some fine Brioche, Garlic Sausage, Italian Ham and Pistachios in there the other day, very cheap.
The queue's are a bit stupid, and it's nowhere near as good as Aldi but it definetely beats Iceland and Somerfield in that neck of the woods.

I think if you go there looking for recognised brands you've missed the point a bit

Well you know what they say: "A Lidl goes a long, long way..." ahem.

As for Aldi...

Well... hmmmm

"Great prices, Aldi, everyday..." (Geordie inflection required.)

Low brow marketing, for low brow supermarkets.

Low brow.

Lidl as you probably know has been in France for years. I wish the French would come over here and plant some of their decent hypermarkets over here and scare Tesco shitless with their range of fine cheeses, fish, they just need a replicator to get the gear over here.

Agreed.

Stepped foot in there for the first time just after it had opened. The layout was god awful. Needless to say, it will be the last. Think I'll stick with Somerfield :)laugh:) for my quick after work shop.

It is a bit of a rubbish shopping experience but I do go in there to buy cereal, so far I've tried the fake crunchy nut corn flakes and the fake shreddies and I have to say they actually taste just like the branded versions, not bad for about a quid.

Lidl and Aldi are both German, aren't they? People are so het up about brands, doesn't mean the stuff's not any good!

Is the Aldi where the Sainsburys used to be? If so have they redecorated or just not bothered- like ESK did in Hastings?

I love Lidls for the bratwursts.

I also enjoy the tangible sense of menace you pick up from the folk who shop there. Unshaven men in vests and tattoos, sporting grubby baseball caps branded with long-defunct north american car manufacturers. Sallow-faced wenches of skin and bone, aged before their time and pursued by a motley brood of hollering urchins in odd socks and outdated counterfeit Premiership football shirts from balaeric markets. The angry, muscular mutt left tethered outside, for which you feel obliged to mentally size up the length of the leish before you edge your way past and back to the safety of your carriage.

Good times. I assume this can also be applied to Aldi.

Im a foody and love cooking and shop every now and then at Aldi in various locations, can't complain on the quality and usually save myself £20.

Some of the wine is gash but the sparkling chardonay - crement is a real find and will better champagne 3 or 4 times its £5.99 price.

spot on. French supermarkets (as opposed to hypermarkets) tend to be excellent - much better than here in terms of range and quality of products.

I've also noticed Aldi stores in particular in continental europe seem to be a much higher standard as regards cleanliness etc than they are here. Their food, however, is generally good quality and cheaper in the main than Tesco/Asda as long as you aren't fussed for name labels.

Surely it won't last if Tesco get their way and open this ENORMOUS store on London Road that's being threatened.

I read it was planned to be FIVE times the size of Sainsbury's! That's some floorspace

Bloody hell, where on Earth are they going to put that? It'll be traffic chaos, New England Road is already a nightmare.
