The ads they had to ban

Just watched an interesting program about advertising that had to be banned for various reasons over the last four decades.

Some of them that got banned were:

  • Advert for Yahoo, involving a naked bloke round a tree
  • Xbox - the one where the newborn is shot through the sky and lands in a grave
  • Pot Noodle - the one where the guy is hunting round in a red light area for something dirty!
  • Tango ad involving the exploding granny
  • The Wrigleys ad where the dog comes out of the guy's mouth

I found all of these adverts funny. Shouldn't some people get a life and stop being so thin-skinned - learn to the see fun and humour in these adverts?

I seem to remember some of the Benetton adverts were also banned due to them being in bad taste.

Maybe but there has be some sort of generally accepted standard.

Is there nothing that you object to that others could say "relax I don't find it at all troublesome" to?

The Pot Noodle ad itself wasn't actually banned - I saw it not too long ago. I think they just forced them to alter the tag-line from the truley marvellous "Pot Noodle - the SLAG of all snack foods" to the slightyl more toned down "Pot Noodle - its dirty and you want it".

I need to get out more.

The problem is most people dont have a problem with these ads its the very few who do they complain so much about it . As they have had a sense of humour bypass or dont get the idea of irony.

And because peple dont write in and say these ads are great the watchdogs think that these sad tossers speak for the nation what a load of shit.

There are many ads espically fast food which should be looked at for promoting eating to much shit food which is more of a problem than a granny exploding

off my soap box now

did they mention the Nutralia advert that featured the customary bathing beauty but actually showed her nipples? It ran about three times in about 1993 before the ITC's phoneline hit meltdown.

People complaining about it is one thing - quite frankly these people don't deserve to have a telly, and they certainly don't need one. It's the ITC upholding these complaints that gets me. What sort of twats do they have sitting on these boards?

As someone once commented: "Mary Whitehouse needs to see something at least nine times before she decides its pornographic. I think that speaks volumes about how her minds works..."

Yes that one I did agree with. It was a bit insensitive to be making humour out of a situation like that.

Of course there is (can't think of what though) but all the adverts I quoted above were so general that I find it hard to believe there is anything in them with which to take offence from.

Yes the Nutralia advert was there, ran for about a year in Europe without a single complaint....

My favourite of recent times was the Wrigleys ad with the dog coming out of the guys mouth, showed it last night - brilliantly done, makes you want to brush your teeth / eat gum just by watching it, most complained about advert of all time....

Did any one else notice the rotating Earth that signified the end of a segment and beginning of the next was rotating the wrong way? well played Five.

Large One, please calm down. If people did not write to various bodies and state thier view waht would happen? Anarchy! I do not for one minuite think so. More than likley, the Mary Whitehouse type would gain all control.

Letters change peoples ideas, as the media does. Advetising, is surley the crossroads where the dreamer meets the realist. Could you imagine yourselef now sitting in front of the box with your child and the quote "The slag of all snacks" appears on t he screen, and they ask for an explanation of that word.

Oh! And by the way i do belive that a few people from the area are trying to change peoples minds by writing letters to various MP's re an ANOB!
