It’s what America does, they love shooting each other. I don’t make the rules.
No, you're just endorsing 'the rules' instead by claiming an assassination of someone who holds different political views to you would 'suit you'. It's incredibly ironic.

I wonder if @Bozza et al would be quite so welcoming of comments claiming a Harris assassination would 'suit them'.

I think you’ve misread me. I’m not an apologist for Trump, I’m trying to get my head around why America’s voters knew the character of the man and voted for him anyway.

As I’ve written elsewhere on this thread, we can’t now keep any pretence that America’s voters didn’t know who or what he was, or that he is “accidentally” president. Nor is it likely that a majority of US voters were voting “pro-sexual assault.”

By all means continue your angry posturing if it makes you feel better, I wanted a Harris win too, but I genuinely feel that this election has given a clear message that the US (despite its huge numbers of self-proclaimed Christians) is an amoral nation, motivated entirely by self-interest.

The US own us in all but name, and that makes me feel decidedly queasy.
My apologies.

Good luck getting your head around why they would vote for the orange bumble****. The first thing you need to try and understand is why those professing to be Christian would vote for a sex offender, an adulterer and a liar. When you work that one out can you let the rest of us know!

Mansfield Woodhouse, actually.
You clearly misunderstand - I would never, ever call peoples' right to vote how they choose, 'stupid'.
I reserve the right to call people stupid for being...well, stupid, as they have proven, today...for the second time.

After all, 'they' voted for this:

• when he incited an insurrection against the government,
• mismanaged a pandemic that killed over a million Americans
• separated children from their families
• lost those children in the bureaucracy
• tear-gassed peaceful protesters on Lafayette Square so he could hold a photo op holding a Bible in front of a church
• tried to block all Muslims from entering the country
• got impeached
• got impeached again
• had the worst jobs record of any president in modern history
• pressured Ukraine to dig dirt on Joe Biden

Of course, it's their God-given Right to be stupid.
You've bizarrely included some irrelevant nonsense about 'Merry Christmas' whilst ignoring the fact that he boycotted Biden's inauguration in contravention of historical protocol. I hope Biden does the same on 20th of January!

'used a racist dog whistle by calling COVID the “China virus” '

Woke nonsense. It started there, but you don't mention any criticism for the Chinese government who denied it.
Maybe you think anybody who refers to Spanish 'flu must be suspect too.

Out of interest, who would you blame for the "missing" votes? Biden's government, or the Democrat governors of the swing states? If there is any smidgeon of possibility that 10m votes can be stolen, then it would certainly give credence to Trump's claims about 2020. Surely the point then and now is that the system is robust enough to prevent mass fraud.
Well, yes, you would hope that the system is robust enough. It doesn't help that the Republicans in charge of the vote counting centres in several counties in the swing states banned federal count monitors from their buildings but, most likely, as has been hypothesised above, millions of 2020 Dem voters decided not to vote for either candidate this time around.

These people need to take their share of responsibility, smugly talking down to people
Its been shown not to work
I'm inclined to agree to some extent.

51% aren't stupid, but there a good few who feel desperate leaving them vulnerable to the populist. This still needs to be addressed, the boil from 2016 was not lanced.

In America 800 billionaires and a GDP per capita a lot higher than the UK has still failed a lot of people.

Cue the more greatly empowered autocrat to sort things out

I've had a personal family tragedy to contend with in the last week, which has been compounded by being absolutely, totally and catastrophically wrong about American society. I don't think I've ever been more speechless or stunned or disappointed for the world. I am awaiting the full breakdown of the results to really get into it but it's very clear that this is who/what America is. They had a very clear choice between ideas, characters and vision for the future and they chose Trump. It's a stunning defeat for competence and intelligence and I really do think the consequences of this election will be felt for decades.

In theory, Trump is a lame duck from the start but as I can see has already been floated - I absolutely can imagine an attempt to change the constitution to allow him to run again in 2028 as the incumbent, if they haven't used the 25th to move him aside before then.

I absolutely do not intend to spend any more time in this thread, for the good of my own mental health right now.

Very suspect.
Spanish flu didn’t originate in Spain. Spain was a neutral country in 1918, so had a free press, to report it.
The first documented case of the virus was in Kansas in March 1918.

Mansfield Woodhouse, actually.
The overturning of the Roe v Wade decision in 2022 did away with the federal right to abortion, meaning that each state now decides their own approach. This has meant that states with GOP control have either reverted to, or subsequently implemented, extremely restrictive policies. In Arizona, for instance, we were left with a near-total abortion ban dating from 1864 (until it was repealed in September this year).

There are whole areas of the country where it is now extremely difficult, if not impossible, for women to get abortions.

I doubt you would think it was "bluster" if you were a woman.
Or a raped and impregnated child. My admiration for Jacob Rees Mogg twindled after he admitted that he thinks such victims should have to carry the baby full term. Is Arizona that extreme?

My working theory is CINO (Christian In Name Only) - I have a couple of friends who are C of E, and involve themselves at their local church.

They have (between themselves) divided their local congregation into three categories:

1. those who genuinely believe and work hard to live by Christian values.

2. Regular people, not massively observant, decent to talk to and well-meaning.

3. CINO - those who are at the church to try and derive status from it, and who occasionally try to embroil the local vicar in what he considers some quite ungodly causes (closing down the soup kitchen, because the annex smells after all the homeless people have been in was one that stuck in my mind) they are often on lots of committees outside the church too.

American Christianity seems weaponised to me, and chock full of CINO who want to use their status to try and order society as they see fit.

Christianity being what they hide behind, but people who would have been given very short shrift by Jesus, and had better hope that no Old Testament god makes their presence felt.

That’s a personal theory, backed up by no more than some anecdotal conversations with a couple of friends in the UK. It’s the best I have atm. I go back to my previous point of America’s total amorality, and not believing this is an example we should follow. Lots of churches in America, very few genuine Christians to my mind.

TLDR - religion as status symbol, rather than belief. Performative Christianity if you will.

I'm neither "welcoming" nor "not welcoming" of any comment I've not read and has not been reported so I politely request you go easy on unfounded accusations.

I've clicked back through the chain of replies to find the comment you refer to. Donald Trump is a reprehensible human being, but trying to kill people we disagree with isn't a course of action I can agree with.
