I took it up with Lasvegan, but you replied, so I replied to you.

As you're on ignore with Zeberdi I thought I'd tell you what he thinks about what you think about Las Vegans thoughts. It's a very tricky and difficult debate to get into but there is also a need to fully analyse and write as much as we can by replicating previous posts and not adding much at all.
It would be really interesting to see what LasVegan thinks about what you think about what Zeberdi thinks.

I remember hearing Bron Waugh on the early days of radio 5, debating redistribution of wealth. A caller rather po-facedly demanded redistribution on the grounds of fairness, and elaborated the structural societal changes necessary to achieve this. Bron replied "you want to change society because you want what I've got, and I want to keep society as it is because I want to keep what I have". As a red-in-tooth-and -claw lefty at the time, I couldn't help but laugh. I think I may have tittered, and possibly guffawed.

That is actually quite thought provoking. I've recently been hearing a lot about equity of outcomes as opposed to equity of opportunity, and it seems like that is a debate that isn't actually recent - merely continuing.

Personally I have found the trend for diversity quotas (which seems, to me at least, more linked to the equity of outcomes idea) coming out of the States a bit troubling...

Yes, this has been a bit of a thing in the states for maybe 30 years. Quotas are bollocks. Looking at numbers may identify unconscious bias, but this can't be assumed. Explanation? They have quite a lot of double backing to do and payback to deliver in the US, to be fair, what with slavery and that. But positive discrimination (as it must inevitably be called) is wrong. And I say that as a working class person with autism. Just give me a level playing field, FFS!

A parallel, but obvs different, situation is the massive reparations paid to indigenous peoples in Canada. I think Australia has done similar (calling @sydney ). A bit of over-compensation perhaps in an attempt to offload the guilt? Probably right to draw the line in the quadrant marked generous. For a generation or two, anyway.

Back on topic....in my job we factor in equality and diversity in every committee. But....few of us have had training to understand it, and those that have (too much time on their hands) don't seem to know how to navigate it (too much time on their hands because they are the most useless of our colleagues, sitting on committees because they can't raise research funds, and other colleagues don't want them teaching on their courses). You can guess the rest....

Here is an example. I am chair of a programme that funds 40 odd MRC PhDs each year. We are a London uni. One of the executive noticed that we recruit few 'underprivileged' students from South London. My response was that we recruit nationally and are not local biased, and we do not have an obligation to educate kids from Southwark. Cue handwringing, and an attempt to change the whole recruitment process so that Southwark single mums with a disability and a minority religion get a lift.

Faaaaark off!

Nothing happened.

The plan never came to fruition since....there was no rubric. There can be no rubric. Because it is all bollocks. Unless you positive discriminate.

I know it's Fox News, but my point is that the situation doesn't actually speak negatively of the criminal justice system, but rather the desperation of the defence team. It's a good thing that the prosecution/defence can call anyone. That one of them should need to call an opportunist criminal sheds light on that team.

I don’t think the ineptitude/inappropriateness of Trump’s lawyers, makes the whole trial a sham or circus though either - . And regardless of the integrity of the prosecution witnesses, Trump still has a serious case to answer with regard to whether he knew Cohen’s payment to Stormy Daniels was meant to influence the outcome of the election and whether Trump fudged a cover up of the payments. If his lawyers are crap, more fool him. Perhaps he is hoping for a mistrial because of Ineffective Assistance of Counsel

Well, they’re mostly former Trump allies and confidants who’ve now turned against him. So being a convicted felon, perjurer and opportunist pretty much comes with the territory.

So - basically the overall value for Trump goes up - at the expense of all the other investors who lose a bit.
