One of the crown jewels in the British sporting calendar and the envy of the world. Many hundreds of millions will be tuned in a cross the globe not to mention the millions on London's famous streets cheering on and enjoying the thrilling spectacle before their eyes. Nothing comes close to the drama, excitement and electric atmosphere of the London Marathon.

Dave at the Ship has kindly agreed again this year to open early at 9am so we can enjoy all the action whilst supping a few light ales and a full english.

It was the best thing I've ever experienced.

My boy suffered a horribly debilitating breakdown during covid. He's slowly regaining his MH through running marathons. His proud dad will be tracking him every inch of the way on sunday

Always remember Dave Bedford's first marathon experience (he thought it would be a doddle):

He [Dave Bedford] ran the Marathon twice: "I did the very first one in 1981. I was in nightclubs at the time and I was pissed out of my mind, with no sleep and a curry inside me which I'd eaten at 5am and later deposited during the race on Westminster Bridge. But when I did it again 10 years later I ran quite a respectable 3hr 3min."

MH aspects of running can be immense - kept me more or less sane through some pretty shitty periods.

Lucky enough to have run London 7 or 8 times and spectated a similar number of times. It’s a truly magnificent event from both sides of the fences. Fantastic organisation, great route, unbelievable crowd support. My last one was done for the hospice that looked after my sister, I don’t think I could do another. I was sat on the grass at Blackheath before the start having a quiet moment and reading a few messages from pals, and the big screens were showing the usual ‘personal stories’ and stuff they do alongside the usual music - don’t mind admitting I had a complete meltdown and was bawling my eyes out. Had a few more around the course - following runners with pictures of lost loved ones on their backs etc.

Good luck to your lad - tell him to enjoy the day and not get stressed about times, PBs or any of that jazz. Enjoy the sights, the crowds, high-five the thousands of kids lining the route (they love it) and take in the iconic moments - for me the joining of the starts after about 3 miles, the gentle hill on to Tower Bridge and the absolute wall of noise that hits you, the tightness of Narrow Street and turning that final corner onto the Mall in front of the Palace to name a few…..

Thanks very much. I'm sure he'll be fine in his happy headspace. He's completed the Boston, New York and Tokyo marathons in the past six months alone. None of which I would have been given the slighest heads-up about if it weren't for my daughter. In fact my boy and his longtime partner got married last year. Wouldn't tell us where, wouldn't tell us when, such was his level of social anxiety. Only got a single six word text when they'd done it. Broke my heart at the time. But having read his story on his MIND sponsorship page, none of which I knew before, it all makes perfect sense

Some may have seen the outfits being given a test run at Hove Prom parkrun a couple of weeks ago.

I hope they’re not all running at his pace as he normally finishes in the top ten of punishing ultra marathons.
