Southgate has been our best manager in 25 years. He's got the players playing for each other and we've progressed. But there's nothing more he can offer and it's time for him to go.

The problem was shocking performances in the main against Denmark, Slovenian and Slovakia, and some awful crap served up at Wembley before the tournament.

This wasn't a swashbuckling England brilliantly coached. Palmer, Bellingham, Saka and Watkins got him out of jail with moments.

We were the international version of Seven Hag’s Manure. Play poorly, a late Fernandes or McTominay goal getting them out of jail.

Despite Bellingham, we’ve regressed since 2021.

It’s certainly time for him to go. Like the Ronaldo situation with he insisted on making us carry a player, Kane, based on reputation alone and it cost us. Whoever comes in needs the balls to make the tough decisions.

He has been incredibly lucky with the way our track to the later rounds in the last 4 tournaments has played out. Every time we come across a good team, we get outplayed.
He’s not good enough and we need a change now.
As much as I dislike the guy for the way he dealt with us and the Chelsea offer, I think Potter is the man to take over and change the England style to a more possession based one and take us forward.

Something else. Southgate is credited with creating the great squad togetherness. In fact....

Football has changed in the last 10 years. The squad ethic is something all the players are into before they rock up. Why? Because that's how it works at club level now. No Billy Big Bollox. All nurturing, supportive and in it together.

Except at Manchester United.

So any modern progressive manage will have to seriously cock up to lose that squad mentality.

Potter, with these decent players, could be the answer. So, I suspect, could the bloke at Wolves, and of course Eddie Howe.

I've just watched the Terry Vensbles documentary and the Southgate penalty miss
He failed then and he's failed as manager in 2 finals and one semi. He's had enough chances.

We cannot take away the fact that he has got us to two Euro finals and a WC semi final. Whatever his shortcomings I expect him to fall on his sword and be knighted in the next honours list and I have absolutely no problem with that….as long as he does actually go.

I keep thinking of how went from a “try not to lose” team to trying to win every game regardless of the opposition.

Conservatism kept us in the PL but we’ve had to be brave across the board to really move forward.

At the time remember how we all argued for Hughton. “How can we ever do more? We’re just Brighton. It’ll never work” yeah well it did didn’t it. England need to make teams fear us for a change.

I also keep thinking about Pickford lumping the ball up the pitch like he’s a young Mark Ormerod and it makes me cross.

It was a generally awful tournament only lit up by Spain and Germany and some great efforts from the likes of Austria, Switzerland and Georgia and a few others. England, France, Belgium and Italy had very indifferent tournaments. Jaded, unimaginative, risk averse football. Big names failing to deliver. Spain deserved to win and Cucurella(grrr) epitomized their absolute desire to win combined with young fearless talent in Williams and Lamine plus the brilliance of Fabian Ruiz and Dani Omo they were far ahead of anyone else. Southgate is an unimaginative manager, safe and polite, it is time for him to go, he is the perfect example of a nearly man but he has won nothing. The FA will make either keep him or make another safe appointment, my love affair with the England team has been floundering for years and it would take something radical to change that.

I honestly don't feel too bad about yesterday's loss. Spain were clearly the best team at this tournament. There's no shame in finishing runners-up to them.

The delayed Euro 2020 still rankles more with me, because we were the best team in that tournament and failed to win it by the smallest of margins.

That said, although Southgate has far exceeded my expectations, I think it's time for him and England to move on.

Doesn’t have to be someone who has been amazing at club football tbh - Spain’s manager was sacked in 2011 from Alves in the 2nd tier and has only really been in the national set up in terms of U19s and U21s successfully.
Big difference is he’s set the players up with an understanding on how to play and they play to there strength. The press is brilliant and they play brave passes (2nd goal no one took an easy pass). We play so conservatively with the players we have. Needs someone who will let them play with an attacking freedom and install a shape and system that all players either starting 11 or from the bench understand.

Potter also replaced a very good man in Chris Hughton. Hughton played pragmatic football to keep us in the division. Potter transformed the way we played and got people talking and thinking about Brighton in a completely different way. RDZ (in his own words) said he was only able to do what he did because of Potter’s foundations. Potter is an excellent choice for England.

He was always a 'coach' at best. Never, ever a manager.

Actually I'd argue the exact opposite. He was a great 'manager', he worked wonders on all the non-football stuff such as mental health, inclusivity, getting rid of cliques, etc - but as football coach he was extremely limited.

The trick will be to find someone who can match Southgate's managerial strengths, but improve on his coaching weaknesses.

I agree Southgate appears to be tactically inflexible and slow to change but he is the first manager since Sir Bobby Robson who has almost won anything as such if Southgate wants to carry on then until a better candidate is available then better the devil you know

Eddie Howe is not a realistic appointment for England. Paying the Saudi state £10m-15m of money (earmarked to benefit all of British football) to have them release their manager is just a massive can of problems that could backfire in multiple ways.

As usual it will be either someone who is unemployed or cheap/simple to buy out.

If the FA go for another British manager, and they probably will, there's really only Graham Potter and Frank Lampard who fit the possible criteria of "being British, unemployed, had any amount of success in the PL and isn't Steve Bruce or Sam Allardyce".

Imho, if Southgate walks/gets fired, it will be either one of those two or Lee Carsley.
