You really don't want to play for free - you don't get a real flavour of the game as people will chase any hand as it's not costing them anything.

Play for real money, even if you only put $10 (< £5) into an account and play a 1c/2c table. You will get a far better idea of what it is all about. Play very tight to start with (ie don't enter a hand, unless you are big blind and can flat check) unless you have a high pair or A9 or better.

Most sites will offer play money games alongside their real money games. When people play for 'fun' they will stay in almost any hand just to see the next card(s) on the off-chance it converts their crap hand to a decent one. That approach is highly unrealistic and in the long-term will see such a player losing.

If you've played for fun a bit already then try playing for real money but, as I said, play for very small stakes. You will find people will fold far more as it's not worth entering a hand and spending real money 'just in case'.

$10 is likely to last you a fair bit of time if you play cautiously and only enter a hand when you have decent cards.

Any of the well known sites will be ok - partypoker, pacificpoker, fulltilt etc etc. It's more of a matter of finding one that you like the look of and get on with.

I play real money at www.pkr.com and it's a great site with great graphics, you can play for free as well, but as Bozza says you really dont get the real feel of the game in free play.

Word of warning, dont play above your means, you WILL come a cropper.
Dont play for real money when drunk.

I use PartyPoker for PlayMoney games. There are so many people on it and tournaments are starting all the time. Big tournaments happen every hour and more than 4000 people enter each one nomally.

I find PKR fun but quite slow paced, so Party Poker would be my choice.
